Typical job duties include: Capitol Detail—Officers assigned to these duties conduct proactive police patrols of the State Capitol Complex and downtown Baton Rouge. In addition to their police duties, officers frequently act as ambassadors of the state as they interact with visitors to our great state. State Facilities Security—Officers assigned to these duties provide police protection to thousands of state employees and visitors throughout Louisiana. These officers enforce state and local laws and ordinances, conduct frequent security patrols, investigate crimes, and prevent and deter unlawful activity. HeadquartersPatrol—Officers assigned to these duties conduct proactive police patrols of the Louisiana State Police Headquarters compound. In addition, officers provide security to the hundreds of employees who work on the compound, as well as monitor the offenders who are working on the compound. State Police Barracks—Officers assigned to these duties provide care, custody, and control of the offenders housed at the State Police Barracks. They transport them to and from their daily job assignments, hospital trips, funeral trips, etc. During visitation and special events, they interact with the family and friends of the offenders. They also monitor cameras and patrol the 1,700 acre facility. Applicants must be able to qualify with firearms, complete advanced driver and weapons training, pass a thorough background investigation, and meet all annual training requirements. Starting pay is determined by your level of experience according to the following schedule: DPS Cadet (0-3 years of law enforcement experience. No minimum experience is required) DPS Officer (3 years as a POST-certified police officer with the power of arrest) DPS Senior Officer (4 years as a POST-certified police officer with the power of arrest) Experienced officers who are POST Certified may be hired at up to $31.17 an hour ($64,834 per year).
