Earth work Technician II

Newmont Suriname was established in 2004 as an entity of Newmont Mining Corporation and is headquartered in Paramaribo, Suriname. The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Strong support from host communities and the government of Suriname strengthen Merian's ability to deliver safe, profitable production with significant upside potential and opportunity for employees, host communities and shareholders.

Dimensions Purpose

Earthworks technician is responsible for performing skilled work in li8ning up both load and haul equipment, moving and placing of heavy objects, and/or is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of multiple pieces of equipment such as Loaders, Wheel Backhoes, Agitator Trucks and other pieces of equipment. And performs related duties as required.

Essential Duties

General Duties

Communicate with all team members effectivelyInspect roads, pipes and culverts during adverse weather conditions: clean brush, debris, rocks, trees from roads, and repair washouts.Set up cones and signage around construction area to alert motorist of the obstruction and potential hazardsEnsure compliance with all safety rules and regulationsReport all safety concerns and issues to management immediatelyProperly select the right gear, tools for the jobMaintain control of all load and haul equipment at all timeMust be able to inspect and prep work area prior to start working.Give directions to heavy Equipment engaged in hoisting and moving loads to ensure safety of workers and material handled, using hand signals or two-way radio.Inspect roads, berms and drainages and provide feedback to management for planning and scheduling purposes.Ensure equipment and tools are stored properly and in good conditionPrepares materials for transport safelyPerform other duties as required and requested by the supervisor.

Utility

Performs of general laborer in maintenance using hand tools Works as part of a construction crew in road repairMust be able to move mobile equipment safely by means of escortMust be able to inspect and prep work areas prior to start working.

Safety

Follow rules related to safety standards and practices before, during and after work. Attend daily safety meetings. Work in a safe, responsible manner to not intentionally injure oneself, or endanger the wellbeing of others.Conduct pre-operational check on work area.Ensure all permits, JHA are in place and reviewed prior to start workMust ensure a solid understanding of and comply with the principles of the company’s code of Ethics and Health and Safety policies.
 Training & Experience

Knowledge: 

High school diploma or equivalent combination of education and experience including completion of apprenticeship program in the rigger trade or equivalent experience.Defensive driving and drivers licenseAbility to use/interpret GPS coordinates and equipment’s.

Experience: 

Minimum 3 years of relevant experience.

Skills and Abilities: 

Must be able to read written work instructions in English and Dutch.Demonstrate professionalism.Have a sense of urgency to meet deadlines.Multi-task and set priorities effectively.Excellent hand, eye and foot coordination.Accomplish goals in a team environment.Possess a positive “can do “attitude.A strong commitment to work safety.
 Working Conditions The position is located at the Merian Mine site.Capable and willing to work up to 10 hours for 14 days in a remote mine-site camp location followed by 7 days off on a rotational basis (14 days / 7 days Roster).Wear all personal protective equipment including steel toe shoes, longs sleeved shirts, or any other equipment to perform duties safely as required by the Health and Safety plan.  Must be capable and willing to work for extended periods outdoors in a tropical climate.
