Echocardiographer III

Summary

The Echocardiographer III (Cardiac Sonographer) is responsible for performing cardiac diagnostic testing and other related examinations for patients as directed according to established standards and practices. The Echocardiographer III applies knowledge in echocardiography to evaluate a patient’s problem, distinguishing between a normal and abnormal study.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

These duties and responsibilities described below represent the general tasks performed on a daily basis; other tasks may be assigned.

Demonstrate competency in assessing, treating, and/or providing care for patients of all ages Prepare patients for testing, explaining the procedure and assuring patient cooperation during testing Perform 2-dimensional, M-mode, Transesophageal Echocardiography, and Doppler procedures Measure all heart chamber sizes, including wall thickness and valve openings Recognize abnormalities during testing, focusing on areas of specific concern Utilize the Doppler probe (pulsed and continuous wave) to gather diagnostic information, as well as calculate valvular gradients, valve orifices, and pressure halftimes Maintain established department policies, procedures, and objectives regarding quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control Assist with the care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies; maintain stock levels of supplies and materials, document maintenance, and call for maintenance when needed Assist with Holter application/scanning and/or other clerical duties Conduct in-services and meetings as directed Attend required hospital-wide orientations, meetings, and in-services Demonstrate a commitment to flexible work scheduling when necessary to ensure patient care

 

Education and Experience

Minimum Required Education: High school diploma, or equivalent; successful completion of an accredited allied health program with specialty in adult echocardiography

Preferred Education: Associate Degree

Experience: One or more years in non-invasive cardiology, and 2+ years in cardiac ultrasound

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Applicant must be certified to work as a registered cardiac ultrasound sonographer, CCI or ARDMS.  BLS certification is required.
