POSITION SUMMARY:

Works with interdisciplinary team to deliver high-quality compassionate care to patients presenting to the Emergency Department.  Performs activities which assist the patient in meeting basic human needs and activities of daily living, providing basic patient care to patients under the direction of the RN, LPN, Paramedic, mid-level provider, or physician.  Assists in maintenance of a safe and clean environment.  Reports to the Clinical Nurse Manager.

 

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION:

High School Diploma or GED equivalent.  Must have certification in Basic Life Support upon hire or receive certification within new employee introductory orientation period and maintain clinical competency during employment with ECHN in this role. CPI-Advanced Physical Skills (receive certification within the new employee introductory orientation period and maintain clinical competency during employment with ECHN while in this role.

 

EXPERIENCE:

At least one (1) recent year experience as an Emergency Medical Technician, Clinical Medical Assistant/Certified Nurse Assistant or at least one (1) current year patient care experience.

 

COMPETENCIES:

Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English and have basic personal computer skills. Must be capable of taking swift and efficient action, including patient restraint when responding to patient emergency codes.

Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations. Communicates appropriately and clearly to team leader, co-workers and other members of the health care team. Maintains a good rapport/ relationship and a cooperative working relationship with outside agencies i.e. Public safety officials-police, fire, and EMS. Performs other duties as assigned, to promote efficient functioning of the unit. Maintains and prepares rooms between patients and procedures. Assists with preparation of equipment and procedures. Monitors stock and restocks supplies as needed. Responds appropriately and in a timely manner to patient requests, including prompt acknowledgment of patient call bell.  Maintains patient comfort and privacy. Maintains an awareness of activity in all areas of the department, offering assistance to others whose workload may be heavier. Makes good use of downtime. Demonstrates the ability to assist providers with treatments/special procedures and the ability to use related equipment. Collects, correctly labels and sends specimens to the Lab as ordered. Facilitates patient preparation for evaluation – undressing, placing on noninvasive blood pressure monitor, ECG monitor, and pulse oximetry. Performs duties as oriented, including EKG’s, phlebotomy, point of care testing, crutch walking, dressing changes, air casts, ace wraps, and splinting. Receives and carries out instructions accurately and promptly.  All patient care activities are delegated by and supervised by the registered nurse, mid-level provider or physician.
