This role assumes a leadership position in driving performance in Safety, Environmental Management, and Biosafety programs while fostering a strong culture of safety. The primary responsibility of this role is to develop, coordinate, and implement environmental, health, and safety improvement programs, elevating facilities to best practice standards and promoting safety throughout the organization.

Duties & Responsibilities

EHS Program Management and Compliance (30%):

Develops and implements robust EHS programs, training initiatives, and policies to reduce incidents and ensure compliance with regulations and company requirements.Stays updated on regulatory and company requirements for ongoing compliance.Provides leadership, education, and overall management of Loss Control Programs, including Environmental, Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Biosafety, and Hazardous/Solid Waste Management.Establishes and maintains programs and management systems driving top-tier safety performance.Leads efforts to educate employees on best practices, precautions, and established procedures.Reviews standards, conduct surveys, and ensure adherence to EHS requirements.Conducts audits, provides comprehensive reports, and follows up on implementation.Collaborates with Occupational Health and HR personnel in Workers' Compensation claims and facilitates return-to-work programs.Tracks and reports key EHS metrics for performance monitoring and improvement.Demonstrates a visible and tangible commitment to EHS in all work-related activities, serving as a role model for the organization.


Improving Safety Culture (20%):

Implements strategies to promote and improve safety culture throughout the organization, emphasizing safety as a core value.Engages with employees at all levels to foster a proactive safety mindset and encourage participation in safety initiatives.Develops and delivers targeted training programs to enhance safety awareness and behaviors.Encourages open communication and reporting of safety concerns, near misses, and incidents.Collaborates with cross-functional teams to identify and implement safety improvement opportunities.Recognizes and rewards individuals and teams for contributions to safety.Assesses and evaluates the effectiveness of safety culture initiatives.Acts as a role model for safety, consistently promoting safe work practices.


Continuous Improvement in EHS (20%):

Facilitates Site & Corporate EHS projects for continuous improvement in environmental, health, and safety practices.Integrates EHS resources into capital projects and change management processes.Continuously improves EHS goals and objectives based on best practices and regulatory standards.Maintains a strong presence on the plant floor, engaging with employees to foster a safety culture.Collaborates with cross-functional teams to implement safety measures and operational enhancements.Conducts regular assessments and audits to identify areas for improvement.Stays updated on emerging EHS trends, regulations, and technologies.Requirements

Essential Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or related technical degree. Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, including leadership in project management.Strong experience in Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) with a focus on program development. Experience in Biosafety Level 3 (BSL3) operations is preferred.Excellent team building, people management, and leadership skills.Strong interpersonal communication skills, including face-to-face, written, and oral presentations. Effective communication within and across functions.Experience in managing behavior-based safety programs.Strong training skills.Proven success in managing Industrial Hygiene (IH), Process Safety Management (PSM), and Hazmat programs.Good understanding of how EHS requirements and regulations apply to a biological manufacturing site.Computer literacy and strong communication/interpersonal skills to interact effectively with all levels of the organization.Strong leadership, organizational, and management skills.Flexibility, innovation, and analytical problem-solving skills.Self-motivated with a strong sense of teamwork.


Preferred Qualifications:

Master's degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science or related scientific field.Formal training in Biosafety and Biosecurity.A nationally recognized certification in Safety, Environmental or Industrial Hygiene is required (CSP, QEP, CIH, etc.)


Eligibility Requirements:

Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.Must be willing to take a drug test and post-offer physical (if required).Must be 18 years of age or older.Desired Skills, Experience and Abilities

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

Emergency Preparedness (15%):

Manages Incident Response Team and support the Site Crisis Management Team and Medical Emergency Response Team.Conducts drills and training exercises to improve emergency preparedness and response capabilities.Collaborates with stakeholders and establishes relationships with local authorities and partners.Reviews and updates emergency response plans, procedures, and policies.Maintains and oversees emergency response equipment, systems, and supplies.Monitors and analyzes incident trends for improvement opportunities.Provides timely communication during emergencies.


Functional Leadership (15%):

Mentors and provides management oversight to site EHS positions.Represents the EHS function within the Operations Leadership Team and Site Leadership Team.Oversees the relationship with waste management/disposal company for compliance.Fulfills duties as the Responsible Official (RO) for the Select Agent program.Develops and implements EHS policies, procedures, and programs aligned with best practices.Conducts audits and inspections, integrating EHS considerations.Stays informed about emerging EHS trends, regulations, and technologies.Provides guidance and support, promoting a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
