Safety Specialist
The EHS specialist (EHSS) is a professional safety and health position responsible for ensuring environment and worker safety and health at TerraPower facilities, workplaces, and workspaces, with emphasis on TerraPower laboratories and project sites. This position specifically will provide support to the Kemmerer TerraPower site and work in unison with other TerraPower EHS team members to identify, recognize, evaluate and control workplace Risks. The ideal candidate will have a background and experience in safety regulations (both State and Federal), laboratory practices and processes, hazards recognition and prevention, corrective action management, and training. Effective communication is an important element of this position, and routine interaction with personnel and regulatory agencies is essential.
Responsibilities
• Report directly to the Senior Environment, Safety & Health Program Manager
• Coordinate laboratory safety and environmental compliance efforts based on Environment, Safety & Health program, plans, and implementing procedures.
• Participate in Environment, Safety & Health departmental, Lab Operations and Testing Group team meetings, TerraPower Isotope Project, and other projects as assigned.
• Identify and evaluate hazards to personnel and assist researchers and research support staff in mitigating hazards by providing consultation, recommendation of engineered features and controls, assisting with development/revisions to laboratory procedures, selection of appropriate personal protective equipment, and chemical/hazardous materials management practices.
• Incorporate Environment, Safety & Health strategic planning initiatives into testing activities and routine work.
• Support data gathering for metrics and performance monitoring of programs, plans, processes, and procedures to ensure organizational efficiencies and desired outcomes are met and program goals are reached.
• Oversee worker safety during work execution; this includes Stop Work authority and escalation to management attention and intervention.
• Serve as liaison between the Laboratory, project management, and Environment, Safety & Health Program Manager in helping maintain safety and regulatory compliance.
• Develop and implement safety equipment inventory system for tracking, testing, and certification.
• Routinely communicate and advise Safety Committee on safety and injury/illness prevention efforts and activities.
• Assist in responding to any regulatory actions or investigations.
• Participate in the development of laboratory emergency plans and assist with emergency management planning and response as needed.
• Maintain laboratory safety postings and tagging practices.
• Provide support or escalated consultation and technical expertise on best practices in laboratories as determined by inspection results, incidents, or by request based on need for hazard mitigation or compliance.
• Provide technical expertise for the interpretation, application, and implementation of safety regulations, research safety, field investigations, hazard communication, and laboratory safety.
• Determine laboratory compliance requirements; identify areas for improvement; communicate requirements; implement guidelines/recommendations to all levels of management, employees, professional and technical staff.
• Conduct training relevant to laboratory/research safety, chemical safety, personal protective equipment, hazard communication, and other lab safety related topics.
• Conduct routine lab inspections to provide evaluation, consultation, and support to ensure health and safety and compliance in TerraPowers various complex research and testing activities and environments.
• Update policies, procedures, checklists, web references, and materials that support the safety program as needed.
• Work with senior leaders on interface and communications with regulatory agencies.
Key Qualifications and Skills
• Undergraduate degree in chemical, environmental, or biological sciences or equivalent industry and 5+ years’ work experience
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Ability to work effectively with a team and independently with minimum supervision and to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills required.
• Knowledge of chemical, biological and radiological handling, storage, and safety practices.
• The ability to interpret, implement and comply with Federal, State, and local regulations and interact with agencies.
• Trust and integrity, communicate openly and display respect and a desire to foster teamwork.
• Strong understanding of hazard and risk assessment, risk, and risk communication
• Demonstrated ability to provide judgment, innovation, and technical expertise in applying regulations and best practices.
• The ability to regularly exercise independent decision-making, advanced technical expertise and judgment on program development, direction, and client service delivery for complex laboratory safety issues, with minimal supervision

Salary Range Level 10: $91,935-$137,902
*Typically, our employee salaries are within .90 – 1.0 of the mid-point of the posted salary bands. Any salary offered within the posted salary band is based on market data and commensurate with the selected candidate’s qualifications and experience. This range is specific to Kemmerer, WY.
