EHS Specialist
Business Unit Overview 8th Avenue Food & Provisions is a growing organization made up of businesses that produce and sell quality products including pasta, peanut butter, granola, and fruit and nut trail mixes to retail, foodservice and ingredient customers. The company was formed in October 2018 through a combination of Post Holdings’ private brands businesses and is owned by Post Holdings and funds affiliated with Thomas H. Lee Partners, L.P. (“THL”), a private equity firm. Responsibilities Position Summary: The 8th Avenue Food & Provisions site Employee Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist helps drive continual improvement in environmental, health, safety and sustainability and provides support to site EHS&S Manager. Position will report to the Site EHS&S Manager. This is a single site-based role; however, the role is part of the overall EHS&S Team and providing assistance to other 8th Avenue locations may be periodically needed. Duties and Responsibilities: Practice safe working techniques and re-enforce EHS policies, procedures, and guidelines as set out by 8th Avenue Foods and Post Holdings, and other regulatory agencies Be an active resource concerning employee health and safety, provide guidance and direction in EHS&S programs to employee, supervisor, and managerial levels to ensure common competencies and effectiveness Support efforts to implement risk mitigation, injury prevention and EHS&S compliance initiatives Assist in the development and execution of tactical strategic plans to improve site EHS&S performance to continually improve overall EHS&S performance Facilitate EHS&S training program, including new hire, job-specific, contractor and required refresher training Support continuous improvement in the site EHS&S Management Systems Support site incident and injury reporting, investigation, and recordkeeping; and worker’s compensation claims and site Return to Work program Support site environmental program and sustainability initiatives; including required environmental permits, reporting, monitoring and recordkeeping Coordinate site contractor safety program Ensure the timely completion of all required safety, environmental and sustainability reporting to internal and external interested parties Ensure key EHS&S records are properly maintained Support site emergency response programs and site security programs Promote and support positive behaviors around health and safety issues Aid in preparation, scheduling, monitoring and completion of safety-related action items and/or maintenance work orders Participate as an active member of the EHS&S Committee, site Emergency Response Team and site First-Aid Team; as applicable Coordinate site EHS&S communication efforts, including EHS&S bulletin boards, signage, newsletters, and various electronic methods Other duties as assigned Education and Experience Required: Technical degree in engineering, science, safety, industrial hygiene or similar discipline. Equivalent experience will be considered 2+ years of environmental, health and safety compliance experience in a manufacturing environment Experience in the food manufacturing, consumer products industry, or similar is a plus On-the-job required travel time: Under 25% Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities General knowledge and understanding of applicable federal, state/provincial and local EHS regulations is desired Ability to collaborate, work beyond obstacles and build trust with impacted departments Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, financial reports, and governmental Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedures Ability to effectively present information in a public setting Ability to perform intermediate math such as basic algebra and geometry Proficient computer skills with MS Office, MS Word, MS Excel or equivalent programs Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule Preferred Education, Experience, and Skills: High school diploma or GED equivalent from an accredited institution Previous manufacturing experience Previous experience in a food manufacturing environment strongly preferred Physical Requirements: Qualified candidates must be able to perform the following physical job requirements, with or without reasonable accommodation: Must be able to balance, bend, crouch, kneel, and stoop for 4+ hour per shift Must be able to stand or walk for up to 12 hours per shift Must be able to reach above shoulders for 4+ hours per shift Must be able to climb/work off ladder for 8+ hours per shift Must be able to work in a dusty environment, high heat, or humidity for 4+ hours per shift Must be able to perform simple grasping for 8+ hours per shift Must be able to push, pull, and feel for 4+ hours per shift Must be able to list up-to 50 pounds for 4+ hours per shift Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of spoken or written word Must be able to distinguish object or equipment visually
