We are currently seeking an experienced Senior/Lead Engineer – T&D Standards & Innovation with excellent analytical, research, and problem-solving skills to lead our T&D strategic & innovation projects along with supporting the research, development, and maintenance of electrical engineering, equipment, and construction standards, for a safe, reliable, sustainable, and affordable grid of the future. 

  

Key Responsibilities: 

Act as a subject matter expert on some of the following subjects: transformers, reactors, voltage regulators, circuit breakers, reclosers, switchgears, surge arresters, capacitor banks, insulators, switches, conductors & wires, protective devices & relays, SCADA, power & control cables, fiber optics cables, and grounding systems. 

Lead the R&D, pilot, and standardization projects related to emerging technologies such as IEC 61850, edge control & computing, hardware-in-the-loop testing, microgrids, energy storage systems, advanced conductors, prefabricated design & constructions, etc. 

Be the AES Lead or Principal Investigator (PI) to prepare, submit, implement, and manage the progress on innovation projects funded by government agencies (such as DOE) and manage the relationships with external partners and vendors. 

Prepare and present technical papers/reports related to innovation projects and AES best practices. 

Continuously improve electric rate payer experience and minimize cost by specifying safe and reliable electric materials, designs, and installations. 

Develop and implement strategic goals and tactical initiatives to create, revise, and synchronize (where practicable) material, engineering, and construction standards for both Indiana and Ohio organizations. 

Manage research and accurate interpretation, and proper application of AES corporate policies, federal government laws/codes/regulations, Indiana and Ohio state government laws/codes/regulations, local government laws/codes/regulations, national industry standards. 

Manage research on manufacturers and sales channels to properly apply electric transmission, substation and distribution equipment and materials. 

Interface and solicit information and ideas from AES internal stakeholders, including engineering, procurement, field constructions & operations, system operations, system planning, compliance & regulatory, legal, customer experience, and others. 

Obtain/maintain or able & willing to pursue professional engineering (PE) licenses in both Indiana and Ohio. 

Manage technical and style verification and editing for other standards engineers in disciplines of substation, transmission line, distribution line, civil, structural, mechanical, etc. 

Join and maintain active membership in national and local professional societies such as IEEE, EEI, NSPE, etc. 

Periodic travel required for inter-office business between Dayton, Ohio and Indianapolis, Indiana; active construction site field visits; manufacturing site audits/verifications; professional society meetings and conferences, etc. 

  

Qualifications: 

Minimum Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering, power system & engineering major preferred, from an ABET-accredited engineering program. Master of science in Electrical Engineering is a plus. 

The following minimum working experience is required based on various engineer levels: 1) Lead Engineer: A minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience in T&D innovation, studies, designs, engineering, and applications across multiple disciplines; 2) Senior Engineer: A minimum of 5 years of practical experience in the relevant T&D fields; 3) Engineer: Requires at least 2 years of practical experience in T&D-related disciplines. Candidates with a Master’s or PhD degree may qualify for this level without prior experience; 4) Associate Engineer: No prior experience required; entry-level position in T&D disciplines. 

For a Lead Engineer, minimum three (3) years of leadership experience in departments and/or large projects

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Hold or Be Able and Willing to Pursue: Professional Engineering (PE) licenses in both Indiana and Ohio. For a Lead Engineer, holding a PE licensed in any state of the United States is required. 

Familiarity with Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) Software, such as PSCAD and EMTP, is a plus. 

Familiarity with setting up or using Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test labs, such as RTDS or OPAL-RT, is a plus. 

Familiarity with various communication protocols (e.g., IEC61850, IEEE 1646, DNP 3.0) and interoperability frameworks (e.g., OpenFMB) is a plus. 

Familiarity with coding in Python or other programming languages is a plus. 

Experience in using electrical design tools, such as AutoCAD and MicroStation, is a plus. 

Experience with National Electric Code (NEC), National Electric Safety Code (NESC), Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) is a plus. 

Ability to research and accurately interpret and apply national standards, including those maintained by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) American National Standards Institute (ANSI) etc. 

Must have a valid driver's license and be willing to travel between AES Indiana and AES Ohio. 

Job location is in Indianapolis, IN or Dayton, OH with a hybrid working schedule (3 days in office)
