Electrical Field Service Intern (SCETA)

Are you only a year from finishing school and looking for an exciting career opportunity with Siemens? Our unique Dual Education program prepares you for future leadership roles in the company. The Siemens Certified Education & Talent Academy (SCETA) program combines theory and practice in a work-integrated learning program (WILP) geared towards technical and professional students. It offers students a wide array of technical, interpersonal, and business acumen training and places them in roles within various industry units within Siemens Canada.

The SCETA program starts with a 3-week paid orientation, and students complete two summer work terms beginning in May 2025. Once their SCETA terms are complete, proficient students may be hired full-time with Siemens.

What will you do?

Are you an electrical engineering student eager to step out of the classroom and into real-world challenges? Imagine being part of a team that works hands-on with cutting-edge power systems and tackles the technical complexities of electrical infrastructure. If you're ready to combine your technical knowledge with field experience and make an impact in the industry, this internship is for you!

Review technical specifications and conceptual design reports Onsite testing of power distribution equipment for 600V to 38,000V, including switchgear, transformers, protection relays, communication and SCADA for substation Prepare and review single-line and three-line diagrams, protection, metering, and control schematics; wiring interconnection diagrams and cable lists; ACDC auxiliary services design and physical arrangement of substation layouts; assisting with customer service calls (emergency, on-site or remotely) Lead projects where the main component is related to electrical products and testing. Support engineers with protection coordination studies relay setting list and arc flash assessments as per applicable Canadian standards Configure different protection relays Line Differential, Transformer Differential, Distance Protection, Feeder Protection relays Conduct protection testing on Siemens, ABB, GE or SEL relays Support continuous improvement efforts and participate in various process and documentation efforts. Complete and submit written service reports covering all aspects of each assignment and activity. 

What will your day-to-day look like?

This internship offers a hybrid work environment, with approximately 50% of the time spent working from the office and 50% at customer sites. Here’s an overview of the daily activities for an intern in the EA CS team:

At the Office:

Assist engineers with coordination and arc-flash studies. Modify electrical plans and drawings. Support the team in preparing for maintenance jobs, including researching parts and manuals. Writing post-maintenance reports. Participate in the programming of protective relays scheduled for future installation. Test equipment before installation to ensure a smooth on-site implementation.

On-Site:

Support the testing and maintenance of low and medium-voltage breakers, transformers, switches, and protection relays. Assist with commissioning tasks, including testing equipment, communication systems, and control logic. Occasionally aid in the testing of grounding grids for customer facilities. Help with taking measurements and gathering information from existing equipment for studies or for modifications/installations of equipment under supervision.

What will you need to succeed?

Pursuing a degree in electrical or electromechanical engineering or related field.  Having hands on experience working with mechanical tools is an asset. Experience with simulation software for coordination and arc-flash study is an asset (Etap and EasyPower) Protection & Control and Automation for distribution systems an asset. Experience with customer service is an asset. Diagnostic skills - able to systematically identify and resolve technical problems. Field service and maintenance experience highly desirable. Self-motivated, persistent, results-driven and calm under pressure. Good verbal and written communication skills in English and French to collaborate with colleagues and customers across Canada Must hold a valid driver’s license AutoCad, basic programming experience, asset
