Electrical/mechanical engineering Internship: design of an electromagnetic actuator
Introduction

Within ASML the sector Development & Engineering is responsible for the specification and the design of the ASML products. The department Mechatronics Systems Development is responsible for specification, design, integration and qualification of the mechatronics sub-systems, functions and components which are fitted into the end products. The focus is on nanometer-accuracy positioning of high-speed components. Control engineering, dynamics, actuator design, position measurement systems and material handling are part of this.

Your assignment

ASML's lithography machines consist of a wafer stage, which positions the wafer with nanometer accuracy for each exposure. The wafer stage is divided into a long and short-stroke stage, which conduct the coarse and fine positioning of the wafer, respectively. The short-stroke stage is equipped with a variety of actuators to enable actuation in six degrees of freedom. The objective of this project is to design a new actuator for short-stroke vertical actuation and magnetic gravity compensation. Therefore, the tasks will include (but are not limited to): literature study into the state of the art, analysis of existing designs, design optimization of various actuator topologies, analysis of various physical phenomena (e.g., thermal aspects, eddy currents, demagnetization, and crosstalk forces), and documenting all relevant results.

Your Profile

To be a perfect match for this internship, you:

Are you a Master student in Applied Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Knowledge of electromagnetics and experience with finite element software (e.g, Opera/Comsol, Ansys, or Altair Flux).

Are familiar with MATLAB/MATLAB Simulink.

Are a team player, creative, a critical thinker, and have a goal-oriented mentality.

Have great communication skills and are fluent in English both verbally and in writing.

This is a Master graduation internship with a duration of a minimum of 9 months, for 4-5 days a week, starting as soon as possible.

Other requirements you need to meet

You are enrolled at an educational institute for the entire duration of the internship;

You are located in the Netherlands to perform your internship. In case you are currently living/studying outside of the Netherlands, your CV/motivation letter includes the willingness to relocate;

If you are a non-EU citizen, studying in the Netherlands, your university is willing to sign the documents relevant for doing an internship (i.e., Nuffic agreement).

This position requires access to controlled technology, as defined in the United States Export Administration Regulations (15 C.F.R. § 730, et seq.). Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to beginning work. Business demands may require ASML to proceed with candidates who are immediately eligible to access controlled technology.
