Job Description
SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Building Management Services Specialist 3 or designee, the Electrician completes varied types of work involved in the installation, inspection, repair, servicing, and maintenance of electrical equipment, appliances, machinery, and circuits. Provides first rate customer service to the University Community.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
May be required to act as team leader or project manager. Provides appropriate project work assignments of a group of assigned employees.
Inspects and troubleshoots electrical wiring, fixtures, appliances, motors, generators, pumps, power circuits, and controllers of machines and elevators, ascertains the nature of needed repairs and/or replacement; does whatever repair and installation work is necessary.
Installs, maintains, inspects, repairs, and services low tension power (below 600V) and light feeders, generating and control equipment, relays, transformers, motors, pumps, switches, outlets, signal systems, and other electrical wiring, cables, fixtures, and appliances of varied types. Does not work on cabling, gear or equipment above 600 Volts.
Maintains in good working order, performs preventative maintenance, replaces failed or worn parts on electrical fixtures, appliances, emergency lighting and other electrical equipment.
Makes emergency electrical repairs, troubleshoots malfunctions and breakdowns; inspects work in progress and completed work for defects, fire hazards, electric code violations or other unsafe conditions.
Uses and understands the nomenclature of various types of conduits and fittings, cables, insulators, and other equipment.
Follows safety guidelines and takes safety precautions.
Works from electrical schematics, plans, and specifications in accordance with established procedures.
Requisitions, stores, safeguards, and properly uses electrical equipment, materials, and supplies.
Keeps records of equipment used, work done, and time spent.
Performs appropriate preventive maintenance on Electric distribution equipment and auxiliaries below 600 volts.
Performs minor repairs to building Fire Alarm Systems. Examples: horn/strobe, 120V heat detectors, battery replacement.
Provides appropriate communication and customer service to external and internal customers.
Lifts, carries, pushes or pulls a variety of tools, equipment and material.
Climbs, balances stoops, kneels and crouches to gain access to pipes, ducts, registers wiring and other equipment.
Works inside and outside (may be exposed to wet, cold and heat conditions and/or exposed to noise and vibration from operating equipment).
Climbs on ladders and works from heights.
Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
Three (3) years of experience in work involving the installation, inspection, repair, servicing, and maintenance of electrical equipment, appliances, machinery, and circuits. Applicants who do not possess the required experience may substitute a current Electrical Contractor license issued by the New Jersey Department of Consumer Affairs for three (3) years of experience.
Appointees may be required to pass a color blindness test.
Appointees will be required to possess a valid New Jersey driver’s license to perform the essential duties of the position.
Availability to work all shifts, including weekends and holidays in the performance of assigned responsibilities.
PREFERRED:
High School Diploma or GED certificate.
Ability to analyze/trouble shoot problems.
Ability to work with diverse populations and in a team.
*NOTE: This is a Civil Service position. As required by the State of New Jersey, in order to be certified to the position and attain permanent status in title, candidates are subject to an examination process and successful completion of a 4-Month Working Test Period.
This position is designated as essential. The designation of essential requires employees at these 24/7 facilities to be present due to inclement weather situations. This position requires on campus work and is not a position that allows remote work.
SALARY RANGE: C16: $48,830.38 -$68,696.71 *NOTE: Salaries for internal candidates are determined by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission’s formula. Salaries for external candidates are determined up to step four, $55,452.49.
