Architect of the Capitol
Summary This position is located in the Architect of the Capitol, Office of the Chief of Operations, Superintendent, House Office Buildings, Assistant Superintendent, Facilities Operations Division, Electrical Branch, Electrical Day/Evening/Night Sections. The incumbent performs journey-level Electrician duties on any shift. This is a career ladder position requiring the incumbent to perform progressively more complex duties and responsibilities leading to the full performance level. Responsibilities Tour of Duty is Mon-Fri 6am-2:30pm. (Hours may be flexible within core business hours or may change due to operational need) This vacancy maybe used to vacancies with TOD's including Day: 6am -2:30 pm; Evening: 2pm -10:30 pm; and Night: Sun- Thurs from 10pm to 6:30 am This position is emergency essential - Depending on the type of emergency the employee may be required to report to work during emergency situations. The position may be filled at the Worker level (WG-8) or Journey-level (WG-10). If starting at the Worker level, developmental assignments will be given with the goal of attaining the full performance level. Duties below are at the WG-10 Journey- level. Major Duties Electrical Installation, Testing, Troubleshooting, and Repair Interprets building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to install, test, maintain, troubleshoot and repair electrical and electronic networks in multi-story, historical buildings. Troubleshooting and repair of electrical and electronic equipment that contain circuit-based components include fire alarm systems, lighting control systems, variable speed drives and electric motor starters for the A/C systems, cafeteria and kitchen equipment (steam wells, Vulcan ovens, deep fryers, dimming systems in the committee rooms, and automatic door opening systems. Runs conduit of all types, figures loads and wire sizes. Uses a variety of hand and power tools. Reverse engineers the entire electrical systems in order to troubleshoot a system problem. Interprets blueprints, vendor schematics, circuit diagrams and National Electrical Code (NEC) specifications to plan wiring layouts. Pulls wire through conduits and through holes in walls and floors. Installs brackets and hangers to support electrical components. Installs, replaces and repairs lighting fixtures and electrical controls and distribution equipment, such as switches, relays and circuit breaker panels. Joins and connects wire to fixtures and components to form circuits. Tests completion of circuits using test equipment. Troubleshoots and isolates ground faults in electrical and electronic systems and removes and replaces faulty parts. Responsible for knowing and complying with the trade safety rules and regulations. Responsible for maintaining and protecting property, tools and equipment assigned for his use. Installs, modifies, repairs, and maintains standard electrical lines, circuits, lighting control systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. Examples include secondary power distribution lines, and circuits used to supply a wide range of voltage, amperage, phase, and frequency requirements to distribution panels, switch gear, power and control circuits; multiphase systems; thermocouple sensors; electrical intrusion alarm and fire alarm systems; emergency warning systems; lighting protection systems; high intensity lighting systems with associated controls; target mechanisms; AC and DC rectification systems; galvanic and impressed current, cathodic protection systems which prevent corrosion on underground or submerged equipment and pipes; amplifier circuits; and related electrical equipment. Troubleshoots, tests, and loads new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, and associated fixtures, controls, and equipment. Determines location of existing electrical devices and service entrances and places new ones. Traces hard-to-locate defects or problems. Interprets and applies the National Electrical Code, local codes, building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, and engineering drawings, and uses trade formulas to calculate common properties, e.g., voltage, voltage drop and current capability in series and parallel circuits, resistance, inductance, capacitance, power factor, current flow, and temperature and length in single and multiple raceways, conduits, gutters, and cable trays. Installs, modifies, repairs, loads, and tests systems, circuits, equipment, and controls with little or no check during the progress or upon completion of work. Assists with the design, development and maintenance of electrical systems and/or components to required specifications, focusing on economy, safety, reliability, quality and sustainability. Preventive Maintenance Ensures that electrical systems are grounded when installing outlets, lighting fixtures and switches. Utilizes preventative measures such as oiling motors, bending conduit and replacing old wiring. When electrical systems break down, responsible for troubleshooting and fixing the problem. Installs temporary electrical wiring and feeders for audiovisual systems for special presentations. Electrical Design Work Assists Electrical Engineers with routing new electrical circuits. Functions include cutting, bending, assembling, and installing conduit, pulling wire, connecting to panel box, and testing installation. Performs other related duties as assigned.
