Summary The Electrician is assigned to the Construction Team at Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS). The electrician's duties include installation and troubleshooting of a variety of electrical equipment and systems on station-level projects and future projects approved by management. Responsibilities Works from building plans, blueprints, wiring diagrams, engineering drawings, and electrical maintenance and repair manuals to plan and lay out the routing, placement type, size, gauge, balance, load, continuity, and safe operation of electrical lines, circuits, systems, equipment and controls; Interprets basic electronic terms and symbols when reading technical/system diagrams and schematics; Applies a variety of electrical formulas, tables, charts, and color codes in order to mount, ground and install wiring and equipment for electrical/electronic systems; Determines and places distribution panels, boxes, fittings and connections, and installs wiring couplings, conduit, relays, fixtures, transformers and other electrical devices; Inspects electrical components, such as transformers and circuit breakers; Identifies electrical problems using a variety of testing devices; Interprets and applies state and local building regulations based on the National Electrical Code; Traces hard-to-locate defects or problems associated with the completion of repairs and installations; Performs other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 8:00am - 4:30pm Position Description Title/PD#: PD00071A Physical Requirements: The electrician works from ladders, scaffolding and hydraulic work platforms. He/she often works in portions of the electrical systems requiring attention that are in cramped, dirty and hard-to-reach locations. The work involves prolonged crouching and standing and frequent stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in exhausting and uncomfortable positions. The incumbent frequently lifts or carries tools, equipment, ladders, scaffolding, parts and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Occasionally, the incumbent will be required to lift and carry over 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Electricians are exposed to a variety of weather conditions, both in winter and summer, in making repairs and installations on exterior work sites. During emergency repairs, extremes of bad weather are sometimes present. Many work sites are hot, dirty, dusty, greasy, poorly lit, cramped and with unpleasant odors. The electrician will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment as necessary to accomplish assigned tasks in a safe manner. Working Conditions: The work is performed both indoors and outdoors. The incumbent is sometimes required to make repairs and installations in bad weather; in work areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty, and greasy; on scaffolding or cranes at heights of 30 feet or more; and in close quarters such as manholes and attics. Incumbent is occasionally exposed to the possibility of injury from falling, electrical shock, burns, and rotary devices such as electrical motors; and is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts and bruises. Education There is no education substitution for this occupational series and grade level. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
