Electrician Foreman
**Summary:** Seasonal Contract position supporting the National Science Foundation managed United States Antarctic Program as part of the Antarctic Support Contract (ASC). Electrician Foreman will supervise and perform electrical maintenance or construction work, or any combination thereof, under the supervision of the Facilities Maintenance Supervisor or Assistant Facilities Maintenance Supervisor. Tasking is based on employee’s prior work experience and ASC schedule requirements. **Position Responsibilities (not all inclusive):** + Supervise the activities of Facilities Electric Shop, Electricians, and Electrician Apprentices + Supervise and perform hands-on installation of branch circuits, power distribution wiring, electrical equipment, fixtures, lighting systems and conduit in compliance with the National Electric Code (NEC) + Supervise and perform hands-on diagnosis, repair, and scheduled Preventative Maintenance on existing systems, equipment, fixtures, and infrastructure + Supervise and install fixtures, wiring conduits, motors and other electrical equipment + Supervise and inspect transformers and circuit breakers and other electrical components + Interpret, explain to subordinates and accomplish tasking working from verbal information, schematics, blueprints, wiring diagrams, documents, vendor/manufacturer manuals, and applicable electrical specifications and codes + Work standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment + Use a variety of electrician’s hand tools and measuring and testing instruments and instruct subordinates as necessary + Timely respond to emergency service calls during and outside normal working hours + Maintain effective communication between departments and represent department as needed at operational meetings + Assist with ensuring accurate material and labor charge code use, and accurate timecard submittal + Interact with the National Science Foundation, military and other agency officials, over the telephone, via email and in person in a professional manner + Maintain accurate and thorough documentation of hours worked, tasking performed, materials used, and processes involved + Advise supervisor of job progress, material/labor requirements, and personnel matters + Follow established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), suggest revisions as needed, and create SOPs as directed + Perform tasking outdoors in environmentally challenging conditions including wind and extreme cold weather + Routinely utilize independent judgment and discretion to identify potential issues and solve problems + Work directly with other departments to plan and complete tasking and assist other trades or departments with their tasking as appropriate + Evaluate labor and material needs for tasking and assign duties to subordinate staff as appropriate + Routinely inspect worksites and evaluate staff tasking + Ensure staff attendance at required trainings and maintain records of departmental trainings + Evaluate and identify job hazards and effectively communicate information to staff verbally and in writing through various venues, including weekly and daily crew meetings + Prepare and document work plans, job hazard analysis, job safety analysis, code required forms, checklists, and internal procedural documents as required + Appropriately use personnel protective equipment to include: Arc Flash, electrical rated boots, gloves and non-conductive equipment + Perform ongoing risk and hazard assessment and proactively identify any unsafe conditions, hazards or Code violations and communicate them effectively + Comply with all ASC Environmental, Safety and Health (ESH), Waste Management and Quality Assurance requirements and participate in Work Center Safety Program and ASC safety objectives + Follow ASC Electrical Safety Program and promote electrical safety throughout the United States Antarctic Program + Learn and use computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications + Communicate professionally and informatively with subordinates + Maintain division metrics following Quality Assurance procedures, and safety practices + Assist with the ordering of resupply materials for the department to maintain adequate inventory on station + Handle confidential matters (personnel actions, management reports, etc.) in accordance with management policy and with the highest degree of professionalism + Review and approve employee timesheets and Maximo Work Orders + Work with Human Resources to timely address personnel issues + Provide timely performance feedback to staff and timely submission of end-of-season evaluations to Human Resources + Provide suggestions and recommendations for re-hiring and advancement of staff + Perform other duties as required **Required Education, Experience, Certificates and Licenses:** + High School diploma or equivalent + A current Journeyman Electrician license, a current Master Electrician license, or equivalent Union membership in good standing. A Journeyman license requiring less than 8,000 hours or of the Residential type shall not be considered. + Minimum eight years of documented experience in all phases of electrical work, including rough-in, trim-out, wiring of electrical equipment and fixtures, conduit installation, power distribution wiring including voltages up to 4160, and design /layout of electrical systems + Must have been in a lead, Foreman, or supervisory position for a minimum of three of the eight years of experience **Expected Skills and Competencies:** + Thorough knowledge of the current National Electrical Code and the principles of electricity + Possess the competencies, willingness, and ability to perform the duties of position + Experienced in construction and maintenance of commercial and/or industrial facilities + Proficient in diagnosing electrical issues and maintaining, adjusting, repairing, and replacing electrical systems and components + Skilled in ability to read and interpret design drawings, specifications, diagrams, maintenance manual and manufacturer’s troubleshooting guides to accomplish tasking + Experienced developing written work plans, job hazard analysis, and job safety analysis related to the work activities under a permit to work system + Thorough knowledge of the principles of electricity and the current National Electrical Code + Proficient in the use of electrical/electronic and mechanical test equipment, instruments, measuring devices, and shop tools such as soldering units, meters, scopes, and probes + Highly skilled at troubleshooting using appropriate testing devices + Extremely knowledgeable regarding occupational hazards of the electrical trade and related safety precautions + Expert in the installation, maintenance and repair of electrical systems and equipment + Minimum intermediate level computer skills with MS Office Suite experience to include Word, Excel and Outlook + Able and willing to learn and effectively utilize computer-based labor, inventory, and maintenance tracking applications + Proficient in LOTO procedures for various tasking + Proficient in confined space safety protocols + Proficient in electrical safety procedures (NFPA 70E and OSHA) + Proficient in risk assessment and determination of PPE appropriate to specific tasking + Knowledgeable of limits of PPE and proper maintenance of PPE + Familiar with fall protection and respirator use + Competent analyzing situations and making technical and safety decisions based on specifications and applicable codes and manufacturer guidelines + Solid decision-making ability and sound judgment to safely and effectively solve problems + Good organizational and planning skills **Preferred:** + Training or certification on NFPA 70E: Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace + Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of heat trace on outdoor insulated piping + Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of permanently installed UPS systems + Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of motor controls and Variable Frequency Drives + Experience with Maximo or other Computerized Maintenance Management System + Experience with installation, repair, and maintenance of airfield runway lighting (McMurdo only) + Experience with maintenance and installation of fire alarm systems and components (South Pole and Palmer) **Physical and/or Other Requirements** : + Willingness and ability to deploy to Antarctica for extended periods + Successful completion of Medical and Dental examinations required by the NSF for deployment to Antarctica + Successful completion of drug screening and background check required by employer + Successful completion of Federal Background Check required by the NSF + Must be willing and able to lift and move items, parts, assemblies, and equipment up to the safety regulation maximum as required by the position. + Must be willing and able to perform physical activities including heavy lifting, climbing in and out of equipment, crawling, and working outdoors in extreme cold as required by the position. + Must participate in community programs, such as “house-mouse” (chores), “daisy-picking” (cleaning-up around the station), recycling efforts & safety objectives. + Valid Driver’s License issued in the United States + Must be able to obtain and maintain facility credentials/authorization.
