About this position:
The incumbent supervises, assigns, and inspects the work of all assigned trades apprentices, electricians, and electrician specialists. The incumbent is required to have specialized knowledge of the installation and maintenance of traffic signals. The incumbent is required to be knowledgeable in the safe operation of passenger vehicles, trenching equipment, bucket truck, pole truck, and various tools and equipment utilized in traffic signal installation and maintenance. The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs and attend all continuing education classes and conferences deemed necessary to facilitate the performance of required tasks. The incumbent must be self-motivated, able to perform duties without direct supervision, and lead trades apprentices, electricians, and electrician specialists to accomplish all assigned tasks in ever changing environments when foreman is not present. This position requires the incumbent to make minor repairs and perform necessary maintenance on equipment and vehicles used to perform assigned tasks.
CLASS A CDL REQUIRED
THE STARTING PAY FOR THIS POSITION IS $24.10 PER HOUR PLUS AN ADDITIONAL $2.00 PER HOUR FOR EACH HOUR WORKED
This position is based in Baton Rouge and requires weekly travel across the state. The primary responsibilities include the installation and maintenance of traffic signals. Additionally, the role involves responding to emergency call-outs outside of regular working hours.

Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
One year of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:
Three years of experience or training in the electrical trade.
Job Concepts
Function of Work:
To perform advanced technical and highly skilled electrical repairs, and installations on utility plant electrical systems, high voltage transmission systems, traffic signals, electrically operated bridge systems and marine electrical systems in accordance with the National Electrical Code.
To provide assistance, guidance and limited support to not less than two Electricians or other journeyman level tradesman while also performing advanced level electrical repairs, installation and maintenance on systems at 660 volts and above.
Level of Work:
Advanced.
Supervision Received:
General from an Electrician Specialist Foreman or other higher level maintenance personnel.
Supervision Exercised:
Lead worker over Electricians, Electrician Specialist and lower level electrical trade workers, helpers, apprentice and Trades Helpers.
Location of Work:
May be used by all State agencies.
Job Distinctions:
Differs from Electrician and Electrician-Leader by the requirement to function as a leadworker over other journeyman and the performance of more complex, technical and highly skilled repairs and installation tasks on systems requiring 660 volts and above.
Differs from Electrician Specialist by the requirement to function as a leadworker over two or more Electrician Specialist.
Serves as functional foreman in the absence of supervising personnel.
Differs from Electrician Specialist Foreman by the lack of full supervisory responsibility over subordinates.
Examples of Work
Job Duties and Responsibilities:
55% Reads and interprets traffic signal design plans, prints, and diagrams for the construction, installation, and inspection of traffic signals. Verifies that all traffic signal installations conform to the latest LADOTD Standards and Specifications. Uses trenching equipment, bucket trucks, and derrick digger trucks, for the installation of traffic signals, power, and digital communications (fiber optic cables, telephone cable). Locates utilities to determine that the depth of installation is to meet the predetermined requirements. Operates associated conduit threaders and tools for installing various sizes of conduit from 3/4" to 4" alongside highways, installs underground junction boxes, and assists with the installation of new traffic signals and flashing beacons and the modification of existing signals. This may include installing video detection, inductive loops and other traffic control devices. Erects new poles using derrick truck for boring hole in ground to set wood poles and builds concrete foundations for steel poles. Lashing various sizes of electrical control cable to span for connecting signals to control equipment. Installs telephone cable, fiber optic cable, and twisted pair cable to provide communications within the Department and for other state agencies in cooperation with the Telecommunications Unit. Installs electric service equipment for traffic control. Completes forms requesting connection by electrical company to their power source.
30% Directs and inspects work performed by lower level workers that install and replace traffic signal equipment such as video detection, strain poles, mast arm poles, span wire controllers, traffic signal heads, lashing wire conductors, conduit, and foundations. Maintains traffic control in work zones. Assembles and installs signals in accordance with details by using from three to five sections directed toward one to six different directions. Uses and reads electrical testing meters during testing and troubleshooting of electrical service and control circuits for proper volts and amps. Uses bucket truck for installing span cables between poles to support signals, signs, and various cables.
10% Trouble-shoots and repairs maintenance problems on starters and contacts. Installs, alters and replaces generation and distribution equipment on DOTD owned complexes.
5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to, emergency/disaster support activities.
