HX5 is an award-winning provider of engineering, research and development, and technical services to clients such as NASA and the Department of Defense. Founded in 2004, HX5 is a fast-growing veteran- and woman-owned company with locations nationwide.

HX5 is currently seeking an Electrochemical Systems Researcher to join our team in Cleveland, Ohio in support of the GEARS contract at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC).

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

The selected candidate will support the development of new electrochemical components for energy storage and conversion systems for aeronautics and space applications.  Candidate is expected to perform research that leads to improvements in performance and durability of next-generation batteries and fuel/electrolysis cells in extreme operational environments. Applicant must possess a strong understanding of structure-to-property relationships of electrochemical systems.

Successful candidate will conduct analytical characterization techniques, such as x-ray diffraction, calorimetry, dilatometry, and electron microscopy.  Ceramic and composite processing may include synthesis by reactive or melt processing techniques, milling and particle engineering, and various forming and consolidation methods such as cold pressing, hot pressing, isostatic pressing, and sintering.

For battery development, the candidate can also be expected to conduct extensive electrochemical studies on redox systems in various ionic liquid and solid-state electrolytes, as well as device fabrication and characterization. An important part of this effort will be based on experimental validation and further development of computational physics-based simulations of cells with advanced 3-dimensional Li/Na and S/Se battery systems. The position requires interaction with other group members located at several NASA centers. Research activities are strongly supported by state-of-the-art battery development, computational analysis, and analytical facilities for chemical, thermal, and physical analyses and material characterization, electrochemical instrumentation for fundamental studies.

Required Skills:

Knowledge and working background in ceramics processing, tape casting, freeze casting, coatings development, computational modeling, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, dielectric characterization, Hall Effect measurements, battery component development, fuel/electrolysis cell component development, battery cycling analysis, failure analysis, x-ray diffraction, ceramic composites processing, ceramic-metal composites processing, and fuel cell component testing.

Other Desired Skills:

Machine learning experience and knowledge of advanced manufacturing techniques, such as additive manufacturing.

Education/Experience:

Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Metallurgical Engineering with up to 5 years of experience.

Other Position Requirements:

Proof of U.S. Citizenship or US Permanent Residency is a requirement for this position. Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
