Position Summary:
Under the direction of the Administrative Officer, the Electronics Technician works closely with the Chief Electronics Technician to support the day-to-day operations of the Electronics Shop. This involves keeping records and accounts up to date, and researching and planning maintenance, repairs, designs, and installations of laboratory instrumentation located throughout the Department of Chemistry and its McGill Chemistry Characterization (MC2) facilities.
Primary Responsibilities:
Maintains equipment, keeps records and files of work done. Performs repairs on all equipment and machinery or arranges for servicing. Purchases electrical components as required.
Assembles and installs electronic devices. Develops, designs and builds electronic and electrical circuitry for installation. Modifies and installs various machines or circuits in support of experiments and for new laboratory set-ups.
Draws plans, sketches, and writes technical documents dealing with electronic function for the purpose of troubleshooting, installing or improving electronic systems. Proceeds with execution as required.
Participates in the delivery and installation of major new equipment in department and in researchers’ labs. Devises, modifies or builds assemblies by interfacing electronic devices with mechanical components for control and measuring purposes. Conducts required testing.
Assembles, from plans, electrical circuits, electronic equipment and networks; installs required cabling and connections.
Acts as a resource person, resolves problems and instructs others. Ensures the proper use of equipment and that safety procedures are followed.
Participates in projects and experiments in the field of electronics, instrumentation and electrodynamics. Discusses needs and technical demands of the projects. Researches (on internet or books) to find solutions to problems.
Keeps abreast of new developments in the field to update skills and knowledge.
Uses equipment such as computers, audio-visual equipment, oscilloscopes, voltage regulators, probes, soldering equipment, drills and power tools.
Performs other job-related duties as assigned, such as training students on how to use equipment – basics training.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
Ability to maintain, modify, design troubleshoot, and repair electronic and electrical equipment, laboratory instruments and appliances.
Ability to use the following apparatus/equipment/tools: Multimeter, Oscilloscope, Spectrum Analyzer, Bench power supply, Signal generator, Capacitance/Inductance meter, Soldering equipment (some surface mount), Hand tools.
Must be service-oriented with the ability to take initiative, be resourceful, and assist users.
Experience in a laboratory setting and knowledge of safety rules.
Detail-oriented with strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize, multitask, and solve problems.
Excellent communication skills with ability to work with internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated ability to work in a computerized environment using MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook), Windows. Knowledge of Linux/ Python would be an asset.
Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level # 3 on a scale of 0-4.
N.B.: This position is located in Montreal, Quebec and the work for this position is expected to be performed in Quebec.
