Embedded Controls Engineer

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

 

Design and develop real time signal processing and data communications with a particular focus on hardware and firmware development for embedded systems and PC based GUI development for user interfacing. Design of analog and digital circuitry for embedded systems including schematic capture and printed circuit design.  Provide sustaining engineering for existing and legacy products. 

Minimum Qualifications

 

Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, computer science or related fields and significant laboratory experience While professional experience would be preferred, Coherent will consider candidates with recent degrees.  Since the successful candidate will be required to operate in a cross-functional team environment, communication and interpersonal skills are critical elements for success in this position. Experience with embedded firmware development using both C and assembly code (Microchip experience preferred), the use of JavaScript and HTML for embedded web pages, and C# (Visual Studio experience preferred) for PC based applications.  Experience with various embedded communication protocols and interfaces such as TCP/IP, USB, CAN, SPI, I2C, and RS-232/422/485 is required. Programmable logic design experience (Altera experience preferred) using VHDL (preferred) or Verilog is also required.  Familiarity with the use of general purpose test equipment (oscilloscopes, waveform generators, etc.) is also required. 

Desired Qualifications

 

Master’s degree or higher in electrical engineering, computer science or related fields and significant laboratory experience Familiarity with common machine tool protocols, such as EtherCAT, Ethernet /IP and  Profinet, is also desirable.  Schematic capture and PCB design experience is desirable, preferably with the Altium design environment. 

Working Conditions

 

Office and lab (electronics & lasers) environment.

Physical Requirements

 

 

Working in a cubicle location. Occasional lifting of lab equipment (lasers, oscilloscopes, etc.), and working with high power lasers.
