The position of **Embedded Firmware Technical Lead** is within our **Infectious Diseases business unit** located in **San Diego, CA (On Site)** . Our diagnostic solutions are used in hospitals, laboratories and clinics around the globe. The crucial information derived from our tests, instruments and informatics systems are often the first step in patient care decision making for hundreds of health conditions from heart attacks to blood disorders to infectious diseases and cancers. This is a technical leadership position contributing to the design and development of our instrument platforms within the Instrument Software & Systems organization. The right candidate for this position will be a highly experienced embedded firmware engineer with medical device experience who has demonstrated success architecting, designing, and developing embedded firmware, and capable of leading the development of firmware subsystems and operate within a regulated quality management system. **RESPONSIBILITIES:** + Provide overall technical expertise and leadership for embedded firmware development team. + Design and development of embedded firmware controlling components such as sensors, serialized devices, drivers, A/D and D/A converters, multiple electro-mechanical and optical components, stepper motors, DC motors, pumps, and valves. + Develop thread safe multitasking code with a Real time OS, board bring up, performance evaluation, error handling, and working closely with hardware engineer to identify and remediate defects in the system. + Lead definition of technology, computing architecture, subsystem requirements definition. + Lead and contribute to platform activities with project teams across multiple business units and global sites. + Identifies areas for reuse of components and other SW/HW modules across different product lines. + Coordinates platform configuration management activities across different product lines. + Leads the analysis of system performance/behavior using simulation and modeling techniques as required. + Serves as a key technical contributor to requirements development. Collaborates to allocate system functions, define interfaces, resolve conflicting requirements, and develop requirements sufficient to enable delivery of the defined instrument architecture. + Advocates efficient, simple, and compliant mechanisms to build a robust and high-quality instrument platform, taking into consideration elements in the life cycle management of the instrument platform and corresponding products. **Minimum Qualifications** + Bachelor of Science, Software Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent + 10+ years of experience in architecting, designing, developing, debugging, reviewing and testing embedded firmware and at least 2 years leading embedded engineers. + Minimum 10 years in R&D engineering/related experience. + Experience designing and testing medical devices required preferably interventional cardiology devices. Experience with a variety of manufacturing processes and designing for manufacturability required. + Ability to work in a highly matrixed and geographically diverse business environment. + Ability to work effectively within a team in a fast-paced changing environment + Strong leadership skills, including the ability to set goals and provide positive and constructive feedback respectfully to build positive relationships and improve business results. + Project leadership and management skills required. + Ability to travel approximately 25%, including internationally if needed but may not be required. **Preferred Qualifications:** + Experience working within a broader enterprise or cross-division business unit model. + Proven track record in leading development across the full software development lifecycle, from concept to launch, specifically in the Medical Device industry (Point of Care in the IVD industry is highly preferred). + Over 6 years of experience in designing products for the Medical Device industry (Point of Care in the IVD industry is highly preferred). + Leadership experience in delivering products within a quality management system. + Ability to lead engineering discussions and act as a bridge between different engineering departments and global stakeholders. + Experience integrating systems that include IoT devices, mobile devices, and cloud solutions. + Proficiency in analyzing software performance, efficiency, and stability. + Expertise in programming languages such as C/C++. + Strong knowledge of operating systems like Linux, RTOS, and multitasking environments. + Deep expertise in debugging systems and tools such as ICE, JTAG, build systems, IDE, SDK, development boards, and compiler toolchains. + Solid understanding of interfaces, network communication protocols, interface protocols, and data models. + Ability to thrive in an agile development environment. + Experience with hardware-software integration of embedded systems. + Experience developing software for microcontrollers, FPGAs, and DSPs. + Experience developing device drivers to interface with hardware designs that include multiple electro-mechanical and optical components (e.g., stepper motors, DC motors, pumps, valves, CCD image sensors, CMOS sensors). + Proficiency with Medical Device regulations (ISO 13485, ISO 14971, IEC 62304, 21 CFR part 820.30 - Design Controls, FDA SW Guidelines). * Participants who complete a short wellness assessment qualify for FREE coverage in our HIP PPO medical plan.
