Department Summary:

MITRE’s Electronic Systems Development and Embedded Security department is seeking to hire talented and creative engineers with a focus on hardware security for embedded systems to support advanced research and development projects of national significance.

Qualified candidates will join a team of technical experts in embedded system security.  This multi-disciplinary team performs hands-on research and analysis and develops proof-of-concept prototypes to demonstrate and advance the state-of-the-art in embedded security.  Our diverse set of sponsors and research objectives provide a wide variety of interesting work opportunities.

Roles & Responsibilities:

Engineers in this role will develop and apply their technical expertise to:

Develop new approaches and countermeasures for emerging threats to embedded systemsHelp develop prototypes (hardware and software) to demonstrate advanced capabilitiesPerform hands-on security assessments of embedded systemsDevelop software for interfacing with and controlling lab equipment for data collection, measurement, and analysisContribute creative and innovative ideas to help shape internal researchTrack, adapt, and apply academic and industry advances in embedded security analysis and protection techniques to secure our sponsors’ systemsCollaborate with academic partners to improve embedded security education at our nation’s universities and high schools

Basic Qualifications:

Typically requires less than 1 year of related experience with a related Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of related education and work experience.Must be capable of obtaining and maintaining a DoD Secret security clearanceExperience with developing and analyzing hardware, embedded, and/or IoT systemsExperience with programming in languages such as Python, Java, C++, or CEffective oral and written communication skillsThis position requires a minimum of 4 days a week on-site

Preferred Qualifications:

BS, MS, or PhD degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or similar field and/or 2+ years of related experienceExperience with one or more of the following technical areas:Signal and/or image processing; machine learningExperience with board- and component-level instrumentation and measurement (e.g., capturing digital and analog signals via mixed-domain oscilloscopes)Software-defined radio usage; wireless and/or network communicationsBasic knowledge of common hardware components, packaging, and board-level integrationBasic technical understanding of circuits and PCB layout designsBasic knowledge of common cryptographic algorithms and protocols, implementation attacks (i.e., side-channel and fault injection)Basic knowledge of modern binary exploitation techniques and countermeasures, fuzzing, symbolic analysisStrong interest in and/or experience with one or more embedded security topics including but not limited to:Tear down, reverse engineering, and exploitation techniques for embedded systems (hardware interface capture and probing, RF and protocol analysis, board-level RE and modifications, and IoT penetration testing) Hardware security implementation analysis and exploitation (cryptography, side-channel analysis, and/or fault injection)Invasive and semi-invasive attacks (and protection techniques) on integrated circuits (IC decapsulation, laser fault injection, photo emission analysis, thermal laser stimulation)
