Associate Hardware Engineer

Do you like solving hard problems and enjoy performing in-depth research to get to the root cause?  Do you enjoy performing hands-on work with electronic circuits?  Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) seeks an Associate Hardware Engineer to work in our Power Systems Forensics department. In this role, you will join a world-class cross functional team performing forensic analysis on protective relays that experienced field failures. You will collaborate with firmware, mechanical, power and reliability engineers to analyze, test, troubleshoot and solve a diverse range of problems. Your analysis will influence future engineering decisions for protective relay platforms, furthering SEL’s mission of making electric power safer, more reliable, and more economical.

As an Associate Hardware Engineer in Forensics a typical day might include the following:  

Work with mixed-discipline engineering teams to perform in-depth board-level troubleshooting, reverse-engineering, and analysis of failures in protective relay platforms. 

Research, document and present regarding various electronic or memory component failure modes.

Analyze conventional analog and digital circuit designs to find vulnerabilities and share findings with the design groups.

Devise and execute exploratory tests (hardware emphasis) of varying complexity to replicate the field failures.

Perform independent research on a variety of tasks and if needed, consult with SEL SME’s and external device manufacturers.

This job might be for you if:

You have a B.S. or M.S. in Electrical Engineering or related discipline, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

You are proficient with the fundamentals of analog and digital circuits and various test equipment used in electronics labs.

You are an excellent self-learner and have a demonstrated history of starting from scratch on any given technical topic and arriving at the answer with minimal external guidance.                                      

You are detail-oriented and tend to seek a deeper understanding of any subject material.

You have a willingness to learn and delve into areas outside of immediate technical competency.

Familiarity with high-level programming languages like Python, C, etc.,

Prior research or project experience related to memory components, microprocessor, microcontroller, FPGA and Digital Signal Processor is a plus.

Pay Range Data

We anticipate filling this position as an Associate Hardware Engineer $60,800 - $95,000.

We are open to reviewing additional candidates with more or less experience and the salary range may differ if filled at a different level. Our salary ranges are determined by job, responsibility, and location. We base our starting pay offer and title on location and job-related factors such as candidate experience, training, knowledge, and skills.
