PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To perform hygiene/comfort measures and selected nursing and phlebotomy procedures for patients under the supervision and direction of the professional nurse.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Demonstrates skills and knowledge necessary to provide care appropriate to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric patients, including knowledge of growth and development. The ability to obtain information to identify patient needs, and to provide care as needed.Performs assigned nursing procedures for the comfort and well-being of patients.Responds to patient crisis and initiates interventions within the scope of responsibilities and notifies RN.Performs successful venipuncture and finger sticks on adult patients, following all standard laboratory safety policies.Performs defined procedures on point of care instrumentation.Responds with promptness, empathy, and interest to needs of patients.Communicates to patients, employees, and physicians utilizing courteous verbal and written communication skills.Completes mandatory in-service education.Performs essential unit specific tasks under the direction of RN, e.g. EKGs.Performs assigned work safely, adhering to established departmental safety rules and practices; reports to supervisor, in a timely manner, any unsafe activities, conditions, hazards, or safety violations that may cause injury to oneself, other employees, patients and visitors.Performs other related duties as required.SCOPE, PURPOSE, AND FREQUENCY OF CONTACTS:Daily contact with patients, family members, visitors, employees, medical staff, volunteers and students.

DIRECTION/SUPERVISION RECEIVED:Nurse Manager, PCC Receives direction from RN.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:High school graduate or equivalent. Previous work experience or completion of PCT and Phlebotomist programs.EKG skillsKNOWLEDGE, SKILL, AND ABILITY REQUIREMENTS:Knowledge of basic nursing care provided for specific patient population of unit.Knowledge of department standards, selected procedures, nursing guidelines and procedures. Ability to perform successful venipuncture and micro-procedures on adult patients.Knowledge of Performance Improvement purposes and process. Ability to perform unit specific tasks as directed by the RN.Ability to recognize changes in patient status and take appropriate action.Ability to communicate effectively utilizing verbal and written communication skills. Ability to perform elementary math skills.Ability to perform specific nursing and phlebotomy skills as outlined in nursing and laboratory procedures.Ability to use appropriate safety measures for patients, employees, and self. Ability to perform CPR.Ability to follow universal precautions at all times. Ability to exercise judgment, tact, and diplomacy.Ability to respond to patient crisis situations under the direction of the RN, following Clinical Practice Guidelines.
BCLS certification.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, lift, push, pull, carry, reach, twist, handle, stoop, climb as per unit based Physical Demand Checklist.
WORKING CONDITIONS:Frequent exposure to biological elements with occasional exposure to chemical and environmental elements, as per unit based Physical Demands Checklist.
