Emergency Department Clinical PharmacistGENERAL DESCRIPTIONUnder the supervision of the Director of Pharmacy and the Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator, the Emergency Department Clinical Pharmacy Specialist is responsible for the provision of comprehensive clinical pharmacy services for the ED including pharmacokinetic and therapeutic consultation. The Emergency Department Clinical Pharmacy Specialist assists the Ambulatory Care Clinical Pharmacy Coordinator in the implementation and enforcement of standards according to department and medical staff policies and procedures.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES1. Complies with established corporate and departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance methods, and safety codes. Demonstrates compliance with licensing, regulatory and accrediting agency provisions as required.
2. Provides pharmacy review of medication orders prior to administration.
3. Participates in the development of medication use management programs within the Broadlawns Medical Center including clinical guidelines, critical pathways, disease management, and drug use programs.
4. Assists in the development, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive medication history and reconciliation program.
5. Participates in the professional development and competency of emergency medicine providers and clinical staff. Functions as a role model and educational resource for emergency department and pharmacy staff on topics related to emergency medicine.
a) Provides staff development support to nurses, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
b) Provides presentations, publications, and other informative activities on medication-related topics to the healthcare community and public.
c) Precepts and mentors IPPE and APPE pharmacy students as needed.
6. Participating member of code response team.
7. Maintains awareness of contemporary trends in emergency medicine through professional literature and regular attendance at professional organization meetings, institutes and seminars.
8. Establishes proficiency in antimicrobial utilization, conducts post-discharge culture review and follow-up, and contributes as a member of the antimicrobial stewardship committee.
9. Provides patient specific medication use teaching for discharge medications when appropriate.
10. Facilitates proper information transfer regarding medication use for patients converted to Inpatient from ED.
11. Focuses on cost avoidance and cost savings due to medication use in the Emergency Department.
12. Represents the emergency department as contributing member of the opioid stewardship committee and antimicrobial stewardship committee.
13. Performs all other related duties as assigned or requested.
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS1. Provides accurate, adequate, and timely drug information to professional staff.
2. Provides quality education training to clinical staff.
3. Maintains annual mandatory education requirements specific to position.
4. Maintains cooperative, pleasant communication with administrative team, faculty physicians, resident staff, patients, and all customers to provide the best possible service excellence.
5. Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to workload changes and respond quickly to emergency requests.
6. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS1. Currently licensed Pharmacist in the State of Iowa.
2. Must be a graduate of an ACPE- accredited School of Pharmacy with a Bachelor of Science Pharmacy degree or Doctor of Pharmacy.
3. Basic Life Support certified (BLS); must have Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification within 1 year of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS1. Emergency medicine experience demonstrated by:
a) Completion of PGY-2 Emergency Medicine Specialty; or
b) Completion of PGY-1 pharmacy residency and two years of emergency medicine experience; or
c) Four years of emergency medicine experience.
2. Current or pending Board of Pharmacy Specialties Certification (BCEMP, BCPS, etc.).
