Summary

The Emergency Management Specialist is responsible for preparing, carrying out and/or coordinating emergency functions to prevent, protect from, mitigate against, prepare for, respond to, and recover from emergencies and disasters.

Job Description

The Emergency Management Specialist will, in partnership with leadership, develop, review, and critique emergency management response plans for Sanford Health facilities. Primary responsibilities to include performing hazard vulnerability analyses and developing effective mitigation strategies related to same, prepare for and perform assessments of a healthcare facilities in regards to emergency management plans and programs, develop after action reports and improvement plans based on incidents, exercises, and assessments and coordinate, design, implement, and evaluate exercises to test and improve healthcare emergency management programs.

Will also be responsible for conducting emergency management site visits and assessments and work with healthcare facilities on the preparation for, and improvement plans. Develop and monitor agreements, documents, public education, and training required to effectively deliver emergency management programs. Monitor progress of projects utilizing timelines and benchmarks, documenting completions of goals and objectives. Coordinate with other agencies in the design and review of emergency management plans. Establish criteria to evaluate and assess progress, maintaining currency with legislation, regulations, and other guidance documents.

Coordinate with emergency management and public health agencies to prepare for major medical disasters. Establish and maintain a professional network fostering strong working relationships with media, key officials, agency stakeholders, and community groups to communicate and disseminate program information. Advise leadership and supported partners on current situation and demonstrate the ability to make timely and effective operational decision recommendations.

Maintain subject matter expertise through professional development and demonstrate the ability to develop and expand emergency management partnerships. Review and coordinate continuity of operations and other contingency plans with community leaders, coalitions, and others.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in emergency management or related field required, Master’s degree preferred. In lieu of education, leadership may consider a combination of 6 years of pertinent education and work experience.

Should have a basic knowledge of Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and Joint Commission requirements, healthcare emergency management processes and Department of Health and Human Services Hospital Preparedness Program requirements. Also, knowledge of federal and state laws as well as local regulatory agencies is mandatory.

Possession of a valid driver's license is required. Certification in Certified Healthcare Emergency Professional (CHEP), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Professional Development and Incident Command Training to the 300 level is required within one year of hire. CEM Preferred
