With the City of Durham Advance in your career while making a real difference in the community you serve. Hiring Range: $42,707 - 58,444 Hours/Schedule: 12p-12a or 9a - 9p for a total of 40 hours per week, consisting of three in-person 12 hour shifts and four hours of administrative work time. Responders will work one out of every three weekends. They will also have a six to seven day break every six weeks (built into their schedule). More information on schedule will be given during the interview process. The EMT will play an essential role in responding to 911 calls for service and providing life-support care to persons experiencing mental and behavioral health, substance use, or Intellectual Developmental Disability crises. They will join a department dedicated to enhancing and re-envisioning public safety through community-centered approaches to prevention and intervention that do not necessarily require a law enforcement response. The EMT will serve on our Community Response Teams (in-person unarmed response) alongside a Licensed Clinician and a Peer Support Specialist. The Community Response Teams will respond to 911 calls concerning mental and behavioral health crises, substance use crises, Intellectual Developmental Disability crises, and/or quality of life. In addition to responding to 911 calls, the Community Response Teams will follow up with individuals as needed and provide support, advocacy, and/or education in overall health and wellness. As part of the Community Response Team, the EMT will assess people for potential medical emergencies, provide pre-hospital emergency medical care to individuals, and help identify underlying medical needs that may present initially as behavioral/mental health needs to persons of all ages. In doing so, the EMT will perform work according to established emergency medical procedures and techniques and exercise independent judgment in diagnosing a victim's condition and in providing basic patient care. The EMT will also work collaboratively with the Licensed Clinician and Peer Support Specialist in their team to develop the most appropriate care plan to address the needs of those in crisis. In all responses, the EMT and their CRT team members will provide trauma-informed, harm-reducing, and race, class, and gender-conscious care. CSD’s approach to work is flexible, highly collaborative, and evidence-driven. Our departmental culture prizes equity, care, and the health and safety of our staff. We are looking for candidates who share similar approaches and principles. As CSD’s response programs are in their planning and pilot phases, team members will have a unique opportunity: they will be co-designers of programs that will assist people in crisis for years to come. We envision adding team members who are not only colleagues but partners in this challenging and purpose-driven work. EMTs will receive general administrative direction from the Clinical Manager and Operations Administrator. They will not carry out supervisory tasks. They will receive medical supervision from Durham County’s Systems Medical Director. Interested applicants can learn more about our pilots and the extensive planning process that has gone into developing them by visiting our departmental website. Here you will find results from a yearlong analysis of 911 calls and focus groups with first responders, as well as a presentation that outlines the major components of each pilot and the research supporting the alternative response models. Durham is not alone in developing new approaches to crisis response. We are part of a new movement of cities across the United States committed to this work and are participating in a national cohort of U.S. cities led by Harvard University’s Government Performance Lab that are launching similar initiatives this year.
