Emergency Services Specialist

Position Purpose

Shell is seeking an Emergency Services Specialist to join their team at the Shell Scotford Complex and will report to the Platoon Chief. The Emergency Services Specialist will provide emergency response support and training to the production Emergency Response Team (ERT) members, perform key site assurance of emergency response equipment, and provide feedback on the program’s effectiveness.

Emergency Services Specialists (ESS) handle responsibilities related to fire, rescue, medical, emergency, and environmental hazards, adhering to established policies, standards, codes of practice, and work procedures. They respond to all types of emergencies, evaluate situations, and apply the necessary fire, rescue, and medical protocols, including on-site medical treatments. Additionally, they are tasked with planning, implementing, and conducting training in fire protection, fire prevention, rescue operations, medical emergencies, and environmental hazard management.

The incumbent guarantees effective emergency response by professionally applying skills and techniques at the scene. The ESS independently assesses and treats illnesses or injuries within the scope of their professional protocols to ensure adequate medical attention.

Accountabilities:

Address site emergencies, including, but not limited to, fires, technical rescues, hazardous materials incidents, and medical situations

Act as a lead in managing the ERT; ensuring the safety of all responders is paramount

Ensure safe operation within their shift team by complying with all Emergency Response Work Practices, such as Safe Operating Guidelines (SOGs), site Safe Work Practices, and Department Protocols

Act as a lead in programs and processes to support health, safety, fire prevention, and environmental due diligence while adhering to applicable legislation

Inspect and maintain emergency services and fire protection equipment. This includes testing of equipment and apparatus as required by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) for Shell requirements

Develop department-specific protocols and training to ensure the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of Emergency Services equipment

Provide service and support to maintain SCBA and SABA equipment

Conduct assurance activities such as fire extinguisher inspections, emergency assembly area audits, and monthly inspections of Automated External Defibrillators (AED)

Manage fire protection impairments, fire water usage, and road closures

Conduct classroom and field training/drills for all emergency services scenarios, and review site fire pre-plans for accuracy while participating in drills to exercise these plans

Provide ERT initial and annual refresher training, offering guidance and expertise to the ERT

Assess risk related to Fire Protection impairments and develop contingency plans to mitigate

Develop rescue plans as required for high-risk work

Actively participate in the Scotford Safety program, acting as ambassadors for HSSE

Keep your skills up to date with relevant governmental regulations for emergency response, and continuously enhance your knowledge and practices in fire, rescue, and medical response through ongoing education and industry developments

Perform any additional task as required

Requirements:

Must have legal authorization to work in Canada on a full-time basis for anyone other than your current employer

You must have minimum 3 years of emergency response experience

At least high school diploma

Must be certified as (National Fire Protection Association) NFPA 1001 level 2 from an International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board accredited facility

Must be certified and registered through the Alberta College of Paramedics to work in Alberta as a primary care paramedic (PCP) or advanced care paramedic (ACP)

Deep knowledge in protection, fire, rescue, medical, and Hazmat responses

Knowledge and experience in hydrocarbon facilities would be considered an asset

Willing to respond as on call in the event of a significant incident or as required to support an

Willing to complete initial and ongoing annual fitness evaluation

The following certification is a plus:

Class 3 drivers’ license, with Q endorsement

Certified as 1041 Fire Services Instructor Level 1 would be considered an asset

Certified as an NFPA 472 HazMat Technician would be considered an asset

A Certified NFPA 1002 Pumper Operator would be considered an asset

A certified NFPA 1006 high-angle and confined space technician would be considered an asset
