Employee and Labour Relations Advisor (term for a period up to 3 years)

The Vancouver Fraser Port Authority is an

The employee and labour relations advisor (term
for a period up to 3 years) is responsible for providing technical, effective
and proactive advice including employee and labour relations, disability
management, employee programs and HR processes. The advisor works closely with
the senior employee and labour relations advisor on resolution matters and
provides support to the manager in implementing diverse employee and labour
relations initiatives and projects. This position works collaboratively to
ensure consistency and appropriate application of employer best practices, the
collective agreement, port authority policies and statutory requirements.
**What you do:**
+ Provide advice and information to HRBP, peopleleaders, and employees on the interpretation and application of the collectiveagreement and on workplace directives, processes and policies
+ In collaboration with HRBP, provide advice topeople leaders on employee issues relating to labour relations, performancemanagement, human resources policies and procedures, discipline, grievances,case law and government legislation and regulations
+ Negotiate with union representatives to resolveroutine, straight forward disputes prior to a formal grievance wheneverpossible
+ Investigate, research, and analyze labourrelations issues, conduct grievance hearings, and prepare cases for arbitrationhearings
+ Apply strategies, gather evidence, prepareand/or conduct investigative interviews as applicable, and write documentation
+ Participate in collective bargaining as aresource
+ Provide support to the LR team in coordinatingworkforce changes and other employee or labour relations initiatives andprojects
+ Act as a technical resource on corporateprojects by providing a labour relations perspective of the impacts on plannedactivities, programs and initiatives
+ Provide guidance on the appropriateness ofdisciplinary and non-disciplinary actions.
+ Provide confidential advice to employees andmanagement regarding effective conflict resolution
+ Facilitate and support the grievance processand other workplace issues, and provide guidance to people leaders on employeerelations and labour relations matters
+ Develop, implement, and monitor safestay-at-work and/or return-to-work plans for employees with injury or illness
+ Provide guidance in the management ofaccommodation issues
+ Coordinate disability case management of illand injured employees, including early intervention and provision of servicesand referrals, to implement cost-effective strategies to decrease absence
+ Provide advice and manage disability managementprocesses for employees, including topics such as policy and procedures,enrolment, acceptance/denial of disability claims, reinstatements,individual/group transfers, disability management practices, and other relatedmatters
+ Collaborate with Occupational Health andSafety, providing services to employees that require injury, medical, and/orrehabilitation support
+ Assess and facilitate return-to-work plans forall employees
+ Assess employees’ fitness for work based onbona fide medical and functional information
+ Develop, in collaboration with the employee andtheir care providers, individualized plans that facilitate an injured or illemployee’s return to work or stay at work that meets the employee’s functionalability
+ Promote best practices in disability managementthrough communication, provision of expert advice, and training of employees,people leaders, union representatives, HR, and others
+ Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of allemployees in the disability management program
**What you bring:**
+ An appropriate university degree along with aminimum of four years of experience providing employee and labour relationsadvice, disability management advice and services in a unionized environment oran acceptable combination of education and experience.
+ Degree in Law would be considered an asset.
+ Must have excellent written and verbalcommunication skills.
+ Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite(Word, Excel, Powerpoint and Outlook).
+ Experience working in a human resourcesbusiness partner service delivery model, is an asset. A high degree of initiative,good judgment, and interpersonal and communications skills are required. Mustpossess tact, diplomacy and the ability to maintain confidentiality. Must havethe ability to communicate effectively with all employees and have a developedbusiness acumen to problem-solve and achieve mutually gainful solutions. Mustexhibit a strong orientation towards customer service and be highly motivatedto work both independently and in a team environment.
