Overview: The Employment Counsel is a mid-level lawyer responsible for advising and representing RELX and the RELX US businesses regarding labor and employment matters.
Key Job Functions:
Provide advice and support by combining skill in employment law with sound business acumen and an understanding of the business goals and objectives of RELX and the RELX businesses.Provide advice and support on a broad range of employment law matters including employee relations issues, reductions-in-force and reorganizations, HR policies, wage/hour issues, and issues associated with discipline and/or termination of employment.Work closely with HR and management to address day-to-day employment-related issues.Prepare (or oversee the preparation of) documentation necessary to effectuate employment-related actions (for example: offer letters and employment agreements, restrictive covenant agreements, bonus plans, separation agreements, and policies).Oversee internal investigations involving employment-related issues (e.g., discrimination, sexual harassment).Provide advice regarding and oversee the management of disputes and litigation.Provide advice regarding responses to inquiries from federal, state, or local government agencies.Supervise and actively direct outside counsel.Conduct training regarding employment law issues.Experience/Skills:
At least seven years of relevant employment law experience at a law firm or as in-house counsel.Experience and detailed knowledge of Title VII and EEO law, and the FLSA, FMLA, ADA, NLRA, and other federal, state, and local labor/employment laws and regulations.Experience with state and local employment-related tort and contract laws and the law relating to restrictive covenants.Demonstrated ability to review, analyze, and advise on day-to-day employment-related issues.Excellent oral and written communication skills.Excellent legal document drafting skills.Ability to work well with clients and colleagues in a dynamic and fast-paced environment, with attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines.Ability to work in a compliance-oriented business culture.Ability to apply legal principles and advice in a pragmatic manner.Ability to work independently and the ability to understand when to seek guidance and work with a team.Ability to manage and advise on situations which may be complex, ambiguous, and involve conflict.Strong organizational and project management skills, with an ability to handle, prioritize, and follow through on numerous projects simultaneously.Stakeholder management skills and the ability to take on different perspectives.Ability to manage outside counsel and obtain appropriate and cost-effective advice and support.Education:
