ABOUT THE OPPORTUNITY:
The IRC in Los Angeles's Employment Training Panel provides job readiness training, digital literacy, and financial literacy to newcomers and current clients that hold work authorizations in search of job opportunities. The Employment Training Panel aims to help refugees achieve self-sufficiency through paid employment and retain employment for more than 90 days (or a minimum of 500 work hours). The Employment Training Panel volunteer will assist the Workforce Literacy Program Specialist with the management of the Employment Training Panel, as well as provide assistance to clients to prepare for and secure their first job in the U.S.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Volunteers will provide assistance to the IRC LA's Employment Training Panel clients in securing their first job in the U.S. This will include one-on-one coaching for resume creation, cover letter creation, job application and interview preparation assistance, as well as employer and employee follow-up, and documentation of self-sufficiency. Volunteers will also assist in finding jobs for clients in the Greater Los Angeles.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Volunteer will gain experience in individual coaching techniques to engage and empower clients.
Volunteer will gain experience in effective outreach strategies to help clients find and retain a job.
Volunteer will learn to create effective professional and job level specific resumes and cover letters to benefit professional development.
Volunteer will learn to communicate effectively with clients across cultures.
REQUIREMENTS:
Language Requirements - English and Spanish and/or Farsi proficiency
Excellent communication and writing skills; including cross-cultural communication skills
Proficient in Word or other word document applications
Some experience in tutoring or one-on-one coaching; includes teaching clients how to build a resume and cover letter, how to job search and complete job applications, and provide mock interview practice
Self-motivated; able to work independently and manage multiple tasks
Excellent organizational skills with a high level of attention and computer literacy
