Endoscopy Tech/Medical Assistant

Position Summary

Under supervision of medical staff, performs technical and clerical support tasks in assisting physicians and patients relative to a variety of gastroenterologic medical procedures, both diagnostic and therapeutic. Performs basic nursing procedures under the supervision of physician or advanced practice provider.

Endoscopy Tech Duties

Prepares exam rooms for a variety of different gastroenterology procedures   Assists physicians during gastroenterology procedures and manipulate the required instruments with skill, accuracy, and sensitivity  Assists with and anticipates the needs of the physician during procedure  Assists in obtaining biopsies, specimens, and cultures  Checks supplies and equipment for work readiness, including scope for proper working order prior to procedures  Cleans and tests equipment according to manufacturer’s recommendations and stores equipment appropriately  Monitors scopes for repairs and communicates with repair company for shipping and maintenance of scopes  Restocks rooms and storage closet daily  Adheres to Infection Control Plan and environmental safety practices.  Other duties as may be assigned

Medical Assistant Duties

Verifies patient information through pre-visit medical record reviews and by interviewing patient at encounter start; recording medical history; confirming purpose of visit. Ensures all related reports, labs and information is available in patients’ electronic medical records prior to their appointment    Prepares patients for examination by performing preliminary physical tests (EKG's, OccMed Tests, Phlebotomy); taking blood pressure, weight, and temperature; reporting patient history summary. Schedules surgeries by making arrangements with the surgical center; verifying times with patients; preparing charts, pre-admission and consent forms.  Secures patient information and maintains patient confidence by completing and safeguarding medical records; completing diagnostic coding and procedure coding; keeping patient information confidential. Provide discharge and follow-up instructions to patients as instructed by physician or advanced practice provider Triages telephone messages and provide feedback and answers to patient/physician/pharmacy calls  Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by establishing and following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations. Keeps supplies ready by inventorying stock; placing orders; verifying receipt.   Keeps equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintaining supplies; performing preventive maintenance; calling for repairs.  Updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading professional publications.  Keeps exam rooms stocked with adequate medical supplies, maintain instruments, prepares sterilization as required.  Maintains all logs and required checks (i.e. refrigerator temperatures, emergency medications, expired medications, oxygen, cold sterilization fluid change, etc.)  Enhances practice reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED BCLS certification CNA or CMA certification, with six (6) months patient care experience Possess valid driver’s license Previous Endoscopy experience preferred Long periods of standing in place and holding surgical items in place. Moving, holding, and transferring patients. Lifting, twisting, bending, pushing, and pulling. Must be able to work in temperatures of 63-75 degrees while following AORN standards for OR attire. Must be able to move quickly with urgency at times.
