Job Title: Engine Design Architect
Salary: £63,537 - 68,500 (depending on experience)
Location: Stafford

About LPSD
The Caterpillar Large Power Systems Division (LPSD) has locations across the world where large engine platforms for multiple Caterpillar brands are developed, designed, and manufactured to be used in oil & gas, electric power, marine, rail and Cat machine applications. LPSD also designs and manufactures drivetrains and the four key engine systems -- fuel systems, air systems, aftertreatment systems and cooling systems that determine the cost and performance trajectory of most Caterpillar engines and machines.
The Opportunity
As an Engineering Design Architect on the LPSD Engines team on Perkins brand Diesel products, you will serve as a Design Lead for all Diesel engine platforms and will be accountable for all product related design decisions for current products and new upcoming products. You will be responsible for working with customer facing teams to understand and collate all Product Objectives and generate Technical Objectives for all the system owners. You will be closely involved with all the product related technical documents while working closely with multiple cross functional teams. You will manage the design deliverables for all projects related to your products, conduct Design Reviews to get approvals from stakeholders for your proposals. You will be closely involved in technical problem solving for Current Product and New Product Introduction issues to ensure world class quality for our products. You will need to continually learn and stay abreast of innovative technology, mentor and coach enterprise team members, and deepen your professional network.
You will interact with people from diverse technical and cultural backgrounds and will work within the team and beyond the team with contractors, suppliers, customers, and individuals working in many Caterpillar organizations. You will ensure products provide superior performance, durability, quality, and serviceability. What You Will Do:
Engine level concept generation, refining and down select.
The Full System DFMEA
SME review and use of established design guides for engine concept refining & detailed system design
Hand calculations to support engine system definition (e.g. flow rates, sizings, etc)
Translation of product Technical Objectives to L3 System level FRDs (requirements cascade)
Product control documents inc. Product Matrix; Engine GA, Model & Print; Configurable BOM
Product Architecture Technical Data (weights, dims, etc)
The overall design strategy – inc. things like modular design, part reduction, re-manufacturability, serviceability etc
Product Design Review Packs and the Design Review
Delivery of key product level metrics (Durability, reliability, DPU, etc)
Perform MBD (Multi Body Dynamics) study for engine systems.
Product Technical Objective definition (cascade of PO’s to TO’s)
The overall design strategy – inc. things like modular design, part reduction, re-manufacturability, etc
The Full Product (engine) DFMEA and DVPR creation
Product risk mitigation & validation through SME review, design guides, virtual tools (calculation & simulation) and live testing
Understand engine performance development including calibration.
Support system owners to generate concepts/design sets to meet system TO’s, refine concept and down select to 1 or 2 design sets/concepts to take through to detailed design.
Risk mitigation and verification planning through the DVP at engine level.
Use of lab tests (e.g. CTAES/AMT) to mitigate risk in potential designs (Pre-freeze)
Verify/validate residual risk in the design through virtual risk verification techniques such as component and sub-system simulation (post-freeze)

What You Have:

We operate a hybrid working week consisting of three days in the office and two from home.
