The Engineer 1 role in Fluidic Systems is part of the Illumina product development team creating new industry-leading genetic analysis platforms for life sciences and clinical markets. You will work in a very interdisciplinary team environment to develop industry-leading genetic analysis instrumentation and device products.
Primary responsibilities of this position include design and evaluation of fluidic and microfluidics devices and components in both instruments and consumables, functional spec characterization as it pertains to system-level performance and workflows, critical parameter studies to drive high reliability and robustness, and failure analysis to root cause, mitigation, and permanent correction. You will be responsible for supporting the design, test, and manufacturing transfer of fluidic components, consumables and sub-systems, with a hands-on approach to troubleshooting. This candidate should possess strong organizational and communication skills to facilitate successful product development across instrument, consumables, chemistry, and software teams.
Responsibilities:
Plan, setup and perform fluidic experiments in the lab.Design and implement testbeds for the characterization and life testing of fluidic components and sub-systems.Conduct analyses including flow parameter characterization and tolerance analyses to drive specifications of fluidic components and protocols.Design and execute experimental evaluations (i.e. DOEs) and author test plans to verify critical specifications.Program and debug fluidic instrumentationAssemble and perform metrology on prototype consumablesAssemble, maintain and debug test setupsAnalyze and present test results using statistical analysis tools for data analysis and visualization.Perform failure analysis and issue triage of fluidic sub-systems in all phases of product development.Be a self-starter, analytically oriented, with a hands-on approach to design, testing and troubleshooting. Work independently and within multi-disciplinarily project teams.Conduct clear and concise communication with colleagues and stakeholders through oral updates, written reports and technical meetings.Education and Experience:
B.S. or M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Bioengineering, Systems Engineering, Applied Physics or related field0-2 years hands-on experience in an R&D laboratory or equivalentRequirements:
Knowledge of basic fluid dynamic principles as it pertains to laminar flow / microfluidics systemsHands-on lab experience designing and executing breadboard systems to characterize fluidic performanceExperience with experimental design and execution, including DOEs and root cause analysisExperience with programming languages (MATLAB, LabView, C++, etc.)Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively across disciplinesExcellent oral and written communication/presentation skillsExperience in microbiology or biochemistry labs is a plusLI-ONSITE
The estimated base salary range for the Engineer 1 - Fluidic Systems role based in the United States of America is: $67,000 - $100,600. Should the level or location of the role change during the hiring process, the applicable base pay range may be updated accordingly. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
