The Role
Candidate for this position is responsible for the engineering of Submarine Fleet Support work. The person filling this role will have good technical writing skills and apply technical rigor to engineering product development. They will also provide technical solutions to a wide range of complex difficult issues while trouble shooting and managing change orders. Expectation is to operate in a support or lead capacity and/or function as a technical lead for specific job assignments.
Additionally, this position works hand in hand with Trades, Planning, Projects, and Construction Management to plan and execute off-site Submarine Fleet maintenance periods. The individual can expect to have to complete technical submittals of design proposals, drawing reviews, presentations, operating instructions, test procedures, maintenance procedures, work deferral requests, departure from specification requests, etc. This position may require collaborative work with other internal/external design and/or test engineering personnel; including NAVSEA, Naval shipyards, General Dynamics-Electric Boat, vendors, etc. On-site resolution of issues encountered during construction or overhaul may be required, possibly resulting in some travel.
Must HaveBachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience;
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience;
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to HaveA comprehensive knowledge of processes relating to ship systems (specifically, experience with shipboard high pressure air and industrial gas and electrical systems, compressible fluid flow analysis, or similar applicable experience preferred); have demonstrated the ability to manage and direct the work of others; and the ability to interface intelligently with trades, management and the customer.
Experience with submarine fluid and air systems; as well as various types of mechanical equipment, including but not limited to valves, pumps, heat exchangers, filters, seals and fasteners.
Working knowledge of all shipyard operations, including component fabrication and assembly and final outfitting. A strong knowledge of dimensional control systems and practices is also highly desirable.
Effective oral and written communication skills are important for this position.
Specific knowledge of SUBSAFE requirements is preferred.
Knowledge and experience with Submarine Fleet Support requirements, drawing products, and processes is preferred. Knowledge of basic hull, mechanical, piping, electrical and related information regarding the ship is preferred.
Complete understanding and wide application of technical principle, theories, and concepts in the field. General knowledge of other related disciplines.
Provide technical solutions to a wide range of complex difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organization objectives.
Works under only general direction. Independently determines and develops approach to solutions. Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy in meeting objectives.
Contributes to the completion of specific programs and projects. Failure to obtain results or erroneous decisions or recommendations would typically result in serious program delays and considerable expenditure of resources.
Frequent inter-organizational and outside customer contacts. Represents the organization in providing solutions to difficult technical issues associated with specific projects.
