Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures. The Engineer II position is the intermediate level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer II position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with general supervision. An Engineer II is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer II effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is fairly complex and varied. Responsibilities + Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity + Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities + Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decision that may affect the work of the team + Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies + Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files. + Conducts engineering and related studies; completes non-routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with the ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems. + Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities + Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally + Will require on-call to help in cases of emergency switching analysis and preparation Basic/Required Qualifications I + Bachelor's degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program + A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree Basic/Required Qualifications II + Bachelor of Science in Engineering obtained from an ABET accredited program, OR a master’s degree in Engineering in lieu of a Bachelor of Science in Engineering + Minimum of two (2) years of engineering experience Desired Qualifications + Degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering + Understanding of and ability to query large data sets + Experience with Distribution Model Management, DMS, or SCADA programs + Substation or Distribution field experience + Professional Engineer and/or Project Management Professional + Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles. + Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations. + Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. + Good written and oral communication skills. + Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam. + Understanding of basic principles of project management. + Experience in the utility industry. + Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department. Additional Preferred Qualifications + Understanding of basic engineering theories and principles. + Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations and preparing and presenting recommendations. + Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. + Good written and oral communication skills. + Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam. + Understanding of basic principles of project management. + Experience in the utility industry. + Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department. Working Conditions + Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility. + Control Center + Operate and maintain a 24 hour/day, seven days/week Distribution Grid Management operations center + The role will require working in a Distribution Control room and have on-call responsibilities.
