Engineer II, Research Scientific

POSITION SUMMARY

An Engineering Scientist will work in a multi-disciplinary environment with other engineers and scientists to develop new products and advance existing products for life science, clinical, and biodefense applications. This position will assist in the development and manufacturing of consumables for biomarker measurements, carrying out feasibility testing, and assessing the performance of consumables and systems as a whole. Additional responsibilities include research and development of methods for efficient or improved manufacturing processes and evaluating prototype consumables and devices.


DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Hands-on laboratory and process equipment work.
• Experiment planning, associated documentation, and summary reports.
o Data analysis, summary and presentation of results.
• Aid in the development and evaluation of new consumable designs and prototypes for various applications in biomarker testing.
• Aid in the development, testing and optimization of new process equipment for consumables manufacture.
• Procure and test new materials and/or reagents for consumables and consumable systems.
• Analyze new designs and manufacturing processes and identify areas for improvement.
• Design, execution, and validation of test methods in consumables manufacturing.
• Coordinate with other groups within the company.
• Ensure compliance with Quality System requirements.
• Understand and follow laboratory safety precautions and ensure compliance with company safety policies.
• Specific duties may vary depending upon departmental requirements.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Science, Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering, and/or Materials Science and Engineering or related disciplines, with strong interest in multi-disciplinary work.
o Master’s degree preferred
• Excellent academic record
• Experience in manufacturing of consumables for biomolecule detection highly preferred.
• Experience with biomolecule detection systems is highly preferred.
• Experience with design of experiment, analysis of test results, and failure analysis is preferred.
• Experience with Labview or other hardware interface programs and computer programming languages (C++, Python) preferred

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Strong scientific/engineering fundamentals and analytical background.
o Logical problem solving and demonstrated ability to organize and move project tasks forward in an orderly and structured fashion.
• Demonstrated problem-solving skills in hardware, software and consumables manufacturing issues.
• Excellent oral, written communication and interpersonal skills.
o Effectively communicate issues/problems and results that impact timelines, accuracy of data and quality of products.
• Proficient in MS Office suite.
• A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected including the ability to multi-task and work productively in a demanding research environment with changing priorities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Up to 70% of the day may be spent at a lab bench.
• There are aspects of the positions duties that require a person in this role to work at heights above four (4) feet on occasion.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• This is a laboratory-based position: an Engineering Scientist should be prepared to spend 50-70% of their time working in a laboratory environment.
• An Engineering Scientist should expect to work with chemical reagents and Biosafety Level 2 organisms including human blood and/or blood products on occasion.

COMPENSATION SUMMARY

The annual base salary for this position ranges from $85,900 to $131,000. This salary range represents a general guideline as MSD considers other factors when presenting an offer of employment, such as scope and responsibilities of the position, external market factors, and the candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities, education and experience. Employees may qualify for a discretionary or non-discretionary bonus in addition to their base salary. These annual bonuses are intended to recognize individual performance and enable employees to benefit from the Company's overall success.
