The Role

The Submarine Advanced Propulsion team is seeking skilled and experienced fluids engineers to assist in the development of the next generation of fast attack submarines, including the future VIRGINIA Class and SSNX. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to the design of innovative systems, enhancing capabilities, performance, and maintainability.

 

As an experienced engineer, you will be responsible for the system design, project management, fluid flow analysis, and mechanical design for one or more fluid systems.  This position prefers a strong technical background and experience that applies to the design and operation of shipboard piping systems; including proficiency with the tools, processes, and best practices utilized during fluid system design at Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS). The candidate will also be expected to act as a technical resource and mentor for lesser experienced engineers to support their work on submarine propulsion plant fluid systems. 

 

Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

The most successful candidate will have the following: 
1. Specific knowledge of submarine propulsion plant design, with additional knowledge of CVN 68 Class and CVN 78 Class designs being a plus. 
2. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to support the development and presentation of technical reports and briefs to internal and external stakeholder leadership.
3. Strong leadership capabilities, including ability to mentor junior engineers.
4. Experience working with NAVSEA 08, Naval Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) and or General Dynamics Electric Boat (EB).
5. Operational experience on commissioned or under-construction Navy vessels is advantageous.
