Want to be part of the team? Apply today! We look forward to meeting you. **The Role** The SSNX program is seeking an Engineer 4 to join the Ao (Operational Availability) team. Ao is one of the four tenants of the SSNX program that seeks to ensure the fleet experiences less down time and shorter maintenance availabilities through improved reliability of components, improved maintainability, and improved sustainability. This is an opportunity to get involved at the beginning of a new submarine design and have influence over what will become the Navy's premier attack submarine platform. This position is for the Platform Ao Task Lead will be responsible for working collaboratively with other key stakeholders throughout the SSN(X) conceptual and design phases of the program to incorporate the Ao design principles: • Engage with shipyards, customers and other stakeholders to collect feedback for design incorporation. • Lead research and development studies to influence the future of US Navy submarines. • Need to be flexible with work assignments and may perform duties outside of traditional discipline work scope. • Be responsible for leading and mentoring other engineer in various studies. • Lead these cross-functional teams through Ao design evaluations and/or supplier studies, and collaborate with designers and engineers to: - Work with multi-discipline teams on incorporation of Ao design principles - Solve complex spatial integration issues while meeting system and overall ship requirements - Challenge design decisions to deviate from standard practice to realize lifecycle cost improvements Researches, plans, designs and develops mechanical products and systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, thermal hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy. Applies research to the planning, design, development, and testing of mechanical and/or electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and/or machines. **Must Have** Bachelor's Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; Master’s Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 4 years of experience. Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program. **Nice to Have** 1. Extensive knowledge of US Navy submarine systems, requirements, system integration, arrangement best practices, and submarine unique considerations is preferred. 2. Knowledge and experience with multiple submarine platforms and other navy platforms for contrast is preferred. 3. Experience in increasing equipment/component lifecycle and reliability 4. Corrective and preventative maintenance experience 5. Project management experience and/or PMP certification 6. Strong written and verbal communication skills 7. Ability to work independently and lead teams 8.
