Summary You will serve as an ENGINEER OR SCIENTIST in the PLATFORM INTEGRITY DEPT (C/60), MATERIALS & MANUFACTURNG TECH DIV (C/61), NON METALLIC MATL'S R&E BRANCH (C/617) of CARDEROCK DIV NS. This position is part of the Warfare Centers Personnel Demonstration Project. The ND-5 pay band encompasses positions equivalent to GS-14 and GS-15. Responsibilities You will be responsible for guiding the development of polymeric rubber materials and material processing technologies that have application for ship, submarine, combatant craft, and uncrewed systems. You will serve as an expert in the subject area of polymeric materials and their integration in naval ship, submarine, and combatant craft platforms. You will lead a team of engineers, scientists, and technicians that execute scientific and engineering projects. You will develop solutions to a variety of nonrecurring technology problems, anticipate future trends, and investigate application of new technology or processes. You will define engineering requirements for the overall work effort of the team. You will coordinate with management and technical personnel to provide advice applicable to program development. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level ND-04 (GS-12/13 equivalency) or pay band in the federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector as a professional engineer or scientist overseeing the research and development of materials processing technologies to support naval surface ship or undersea systems. Education You must meet at least one of the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: FOR THE ND-0806-0830-0893 Degree: A professional engineering degree from an ABET-accredited college or university; OR a degree with curriculum in differential and integral calculus, with additional courses in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics; or electronics; OR Substitution of Education/Experience: A combination of education and experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering; and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. The adequacy of such background must be demonstrated by one of the following: (a) professional registration, (b) evidence of successfully passing the Engineer-in-Training (EIT) examination; (c) successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences and in engineering that included the courses specified above; or (d) successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or in an appropriate professional field, e.g., physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a degree in engineering provided that it included at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance.
