Provide technical expertise in the specialized fields of substation apparatus, protection and control equipment or communications equipment. Act as an expert to personnel in a specialized field to investigate and resolve problem situations or complex issues. Facilitate internal training for substation journeyman, relay technicians or communications technicians. Research, analyze, develop, and implement new programs, systems and/or processes in response to changing internal and external conditions. Develop and maintain operational and procedural documentation.
This position is in T&D System Operations – Apparatus, Substation Technical Support.
• Provide technical expertise to critical and highly complex substation, distribution and transmission operation and control functions within the business.
• Develop and modify policies and practices to improve the overall operational effectiveness of PacifiCorp's transmission and distribution system.
• Lead development and implementation processes and procedures to enhance operational effectiveness.
• Evaluate policies, procedures and other documentation and ensure all aspects of electrical operations are in accordance with company safety procedures, legislative requirements and meet all NERC reliability standard requirements.
• Supervise local relay technicians, communication technicians, and substation journeymen and develop and review daily and weekly schedules when required.
• Analyze schemes and prints and prepare field notebooks and outlines for installation of substation equipment.
• Work with engineers and operations staff to resolve system and design issues.
• Provide training as needed for various departments including dispatch, relay technicians, relay technician trainees, communication technicians, communication technician trainees, substation journeyman, substation journeyman apprentices and switchman.
• Maintain project timelines and budgets.
• Analyze and design engineering methods.
The Sr Engineer position requirements include:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field; or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
• A minimum of five or more years of industry experience as a substation design engineer, substation maintenance engineer, or related field.
• Knowledge of the power system.
• Assessment skills including problem diagnosis and identification of proper methods and techniques to resolve and prevent future problems.
• Communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to consult and resolve internal and external customer issues which maybe critical, sensitive, or urgent in nature.
• Ability to work with all levels of an organization including people with different styles and backgrounds; ability to work as a member of a team.
• Expert knowledge of current technologies, tools, systems, and vendors.
• Proficient with the use of personal computers and automated tools.
• Understanding of applicable company policies, practices, and procedures.
• Ability to effectively translate technical jargon into layman’s terms.
• Travel may be required.
• Respond after hours to support field crews as required.
In addition to the above, the Sr II Engineer position requirements include:
• A minimum of six or more years of industry experience as a substation commissioning, design, or maintenance engineer or related field with an advanced technical degree or professional engineer (PE) license required OR a minimum of eight years of industry experience as a substation commissioning, design, or maintenance engineer or related field required.
• Experience supervising technical personnel.
