The Role

The Shock Engineering and Advanced Analysis team is looking for an Engineer Structural 3 for support of all platforms (CVN, Special Projects, VCS, SSNX). This is an opportunity to join our growing team to contribute and influence the Navy's future and work on a broad spectrum of exciting projects and problems.


• The Engineer candidate will perform dynamic structural (shock) analyses utilizing finite element analysis (FEA) methods with the pre-/post-processor (FEMAP and NASTRAN, Abaqus, Hypermesh, Government codes) computer applications, perform hand calculations using textbook methods, and develop engineering calculation reports, check structural analyses reports
• The candidate will be working in an environment where technical growth opportunities abound, leading to exciting opportunities to grow in dynamic and transient analysis methods, underwater explosion analysis and related projects
• The candidate will lead various projects of growing scope depending on performance
• The candidate will provide technical oversight and training to junior engineers

 

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

 

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 5 years of relevant exempt experience; 
Master’s Degree and 3 years of relevant professional experience; 
Ph.D. and 0 years of experience.

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

Nice to Have

• Eventual SECRET clearance will be required.
• Detailed knowledge of structural response and design requirements for surface ship or submarines
• Detailed knowledge and experience with Finite Element Analysis software (Femap, Hypermesh, or Abaqus) and related first-principles methods
• Ability to learn new programs and old, i.e FORTRAN, Matlab, python, etc.
• Ability to move forward on projects when path isn’t clear through consultation with senior engineers
• Experience in project management with an ability to plan and execute tasks to meet program objectives
• Ability to communicate with internal and external customers in a professional manner
• Skilled at technical writing and reporting
• Experience with high performance computing systems and nonlinear advanced analysis methods
