The Consultant - Engineer works with a team to identify and/or support sales and use tax savings opportunities for clients associated with utilities like electricity and natural gas. This includes researching multistate industrial exemptions and tax issues to apply to each process in order to complete detailed calculations in the form of predominant or exempt use utility studies, as required by the varying taxing jurisdictions. The Engineer will use his/her expertise to apply various equipment load requirements and hours of operation to establish correct duty factors resulting in annual estimated consumption for all equipment inventoried so that the calculations presented may be certified.Duties and Responsibilities:
Assists Manager in data collection, input, and analysis along with the tax recovery process.Travels to client locations and inventories all electricity and natural gas-consuming equipment name plate data for input into the predominant use study.Reviews client documentation like piping and instrumentation diagrams, electrical one-lines, process-flow diagrams, plant schematics, and motor or asset lists.Communicates with client engineers to understand the function of each piece of equipment as it relates to the process.Research tax issues relative to specific industries and allowable exemptions.Works with raw data to complete calculations.Prepares utility studies to determine predominant use of electricity or natural gas.Signs off on state documentation that require engineering degree or expertise.Communicates technical concepts effectively through written and verbal channels.Partners with other Transaction Tax Practice teams to maximize the client’s benefit of any tax recoveries related to utilities.Performs other duties as assigned.Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in electrical or mechanical engineering with at least 2 to 5 years of manufacturing or energy-related tax experience.
Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must have intermediate knowledge of Microsoft® Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Internet navigation and research.
Certificates and Licenses:
Valid driver’s license required.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position has limited supervisory responsibilities specific to reviewing tasks performed by assisting administrative personnel.
Work Environment:
