Engineering Group Manager Motorsports Vehicle Development
Job Description

Onsite - This role is categorized as onsite. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to Concord, NC on a full-time basis.

The Role

General Motors competes globally in various motorsports series including NASCAR, IndyCar, IMSA, and WEC, and we are actively seeking an entry in Formula One.  We support multiple race teams with technology and guidance to enhance their competitiveness at the highest levels of motorsport.  A significant part of this effort includes engineering research and development in the subject matter areas critical to racing performance spanning the disciplines of aerodynamics, tire performance, vehicle dynamics and simulation, design and manufacturing, performance engineering, race strategy, vehicle systems performance, software engineering, and propulsion.  As part of our purpose, we also collaboratively drive technological innovations from motorsports to GM's production efforts.

We are seeking an experienced race vehicle engineer and designer to be the Engineering Group Manager for our Vehicle Development Group.  This group develops race cars for the racing series in which General Motors competes.  The scope of development includes series homologations, EVOs, and submissions, the successful completion of which earns sanctioning body approval of submitted designs for competition.  Limited forms of these activities involve components or subsystems of cars, whereas larger efforts span complete vehicle designs.

The Engineering Group Manager for Vehicle Development leads a group of Chief Engineers in these endeavors.  The group works with our Series Program Managers and Series Technical Managers to gain perspective and appreciation for development priorities in each racing series.  The group also interacts with the Design and Manufacturing Group and other Motorsports functional departments leveraging their expertise to create race vehicles with the highest performance potential.

This effort relies on virtual development methods complemented by physical testing and validation of proposed designs.  The vehicle design and development process starts with initial performance assessments that highlight areas for improvement and progresses to component and vehicle simulation and testing.  The Engineering Group Manager of Vehicle Development also takes into consideration budgetary implications of new designs.  The final product of the submission effort consists of the vehicle design, performance models, and a complete bill of materials.

The Engineering Group Manager for Vehicle Development is responsible for all phases of race vehicle submission and homologation testing.  They plan and execute all design and development activities, and they interact with racing series sanctioning groups to coordinate all official homologation activities.
