Engineering Manager-ENM
SUMMARY: Provide Leadership and Management with engineering and technical support to substation professionals comprised of substation physical engineers, designers, and drafters for the purpose of delivering safe, cost-effective, and quality engineering and design services. Incumbents will manage direct reports including engineers and designers, CAD technicians and administrative personnel and/or supervisors who manage physical design teams. This role is primarily a leadership role but may include both direct billable client work (project work) based on project loading. The incumbent is expected to establish and/or maintain processes for project tracking, quality control, financial controls, personnel development, and client engagement. Personnel responsibilities include developing dynamic teams through superior leadership, training, performance reviews, recruiting, succession planning and adherence to standards of conduct. Provide technical competency and direction on complex engineering and technical problems in the specific area of expertise for the management of engineering projects. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Provide leadership and management along with engineering/technical leadership to a skilled, qualified, and motivated engineering and design team by: + Displaying effective leadership skills in communication, development, motivation, accountability, and assisting individuals through the use of innovative techniques and effective management systems. + Ensuring that individuals have the training, tools, personal equipment, work environment, and technical support to optimize their performance and achieve desired results. + Coaching, training and mentoring an engineering and design team and/or engineering and design supervisors. + Providing honest and constructive feedback, assistance in setting priorities, and opportunities for personal and professional development. Perform project management and controls activities on client projects along with the ability to be Responsible Charge for engineering. Ensure that cost and utilization goals are met by effective planning, organizing, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities. Provide technical leadership to ensure that all specific engineering designs are provided per applicable professional codes and standards by: + Providing technical direction to project teams on complex multi-disciplined projects. + Creating or maintaining systems for tracking projects, client satisfaction, staff development, and quality control + Developing and maintaining engineering standards, work practices, and systems. + Maintaining knowledge of the engineering and technical industry codes, standards, and best practices. + Developing and maintaining knowledge of the current and future enablers, systems, and applications available in the industry to ensure continuous improvement. Manage and develop client relations through partnerships between Pike Engineering and our clients Administer and ensure adherence to Pike Engineering corporate safety policies. Carry out administrative duties in accordance with company policy. Assist in recruiting efforts, business development and strategic planning. Perform other duties as assigned by management. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: Manage a team of substation engineering and design professionals with direct management responsibility and/or supervisor that directly supervise the team. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE Required A Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or University in Electrical or Civil Engineering (with a preference for Electrical Engineering) and experience equivalent to 10+ years in Engineering practice. Required Engineering Degree awarded from a College of University that is accredited by ABET Experience 10+ Year(s) Experience in Substation Engineering CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Professional Engineer (P.E.) ON-THE-JOB TRAINING: Significant experience at a professional level in electrical power system engineering related to designing utility transmission and distribution substations. LANGUAGE SKILLS: A. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. B. Ability to write reports, Business correspondence, and procedure manuals. C. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or the business community MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: A. Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plan and solid geometry and trigonometry. B. Ability to compute rate, ratios, and percent and to draw and interpret spreadsheets REASONING ABILITY: A. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. B. Ability to define problems collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Preferred: + Skilled in principles of project management. + NCEES and registration as a Professional Engineer in multiple states + Experience in the electric utility industry. + 8 - 10 years of electrical utility substation design experience (as an employee, contractor, or consultant) with a working knowledge of electrical substation design at voltage of 69kV and higher. + Technical proficiency in all aspects of electric utility substation design including general arrangement and layout of the substation equipment; understanding of the functions and application of all components (breakers, transformers, cap banks, reactors, etc.); understanding of foundation design, grounding, lightning and shielding protection, relays and controls; etc. + Ability to ensure that a complete design package (drawings, bill of materials, conduit lists, construction specifications, etc.) are delivered to the client within budget and on time with a high level of quality. + Ability to constantly improve processes and procedure to ensure best possible delivered designs. + Proficiency with NESC and IEEE and industry standards. + Working knowledge and ability to perform: + Grounding studies. + Bus calculations. + Lightning protection studies. + Substation lighting / illumination studies.
