Position Overview Paylocity is looking for an Engineering Manager II to lead a team within the Benefits product domain. This role is pivotal in driving the technical execution and operational excellence of a team of software engineers and software engineers in test. You will work in close partnership with Product Management and User Experience Design to build and enhance solutions that empower our customers. As an Engineering Manager II, you will provide hands-on leadership in fostering a high-performing team, refining engineering processes, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality software. You will be responsible for guiding and supporting engineers at various experience levels while driving the health, scalability, and quality of the products within your domain. Who You Are + A proactive leader who is passionate about developing and mentoring engineers. + Experienced in building and scaling engineering teams, fostering collaboration, and driving accountability. + Adept at balancing technical depth with operational execution, ensuring teams are unblocked and able to deliver at a high velocity. + A strategic thinker who can manage dependencies, technical challenges, and evolving business needs. + Skilled at building strong cross-functional partnerships, particularly with Product Management and UX. + Comfortable leading a team responsible for a domain with multiple dependencies or outcomes. Responsibilities + Technical Leadership & Execution + Own the overall health, engineering quality, and technical strategy of key functional aspects of the Benefits domain. + Work closely within the team to establish adherence to engineering best practices, including coding standards, architectural patterns, and system reliability. + Drive the adoption of platforms and reusable patterns within Paylocity’s ecosystem. + Team Management & Development + Lead a team of software engineers and software engineers in test, supporting career growth and professional development. + Provide coaching and mentorship, helping team members navigate challenges and progress in their careers. + Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture that prioritizes both high performance and well-being. + Operational & Process Excellence + Define and optimize team processes, including development workflows, planning, on-call rotations, bug triage, and metrics reviews. + Drive accountability and efficiency by setting clear expectations and monitoring execution. + Implement continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering effectiveness and product delivery. + Cross-Functional Collaboration + Partner closely with Product Management and UX to align on roadmap, priorities, and user needs. + Work with stakeholders to understand requirements, manage dependencies, and set technical direction. + Advocate for engineering needs and technical debt management while balancing business priorities. Required Experience + Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or related field or equivalent experience. + Minimum 7+ years of experience in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in a Software Engineering Management role. + Strong technical expertise in software architecture, system design, and engineering best practices. + Experience leading teams in an agile development environment, optimizing processes for speed and quality. + Proven track record of mentoring and growing engineers across different levels. + Ability to manage technical complexity and drive solutions that scale effectively. + Strong understanding of modern software development methodologies, CI/CD, cloud infrastructure, and testing frameworks. + Experience working in partnership with Product Management and UX teams. + Fluent written and verbal communication skills that enable collaboration with technical or business-centric peers Preferred Experience + Prior experience in HR or Benefits technology domains. + Hands-on experience with AWS or other cloud platforms. + Familiarity with modern frontend and backend technologies relevant to SaaS applications. + Experience in organizations that prioritize developer productivity, DevOps, and engineering enablement. + Demonstrated ability to lead teams working on products with multiple dependencies or complex integrations. + Prior understanding of RESTful API design and development. The pay range for this position is $129,400 - $184,800 /yr; however, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. This position is eligible for an annual bonus and restricted stock unit grant based on individual performance in addition to a full range of benefits outlined here.
