ENGINEERING SOFTWARE MGR

Job Purpose:
Weatherford is seeking a motivated and experienced Engineering Software Manager to join our expanding software engineering organization to develop industry leading software solutions for the energy industry. The successful candidate will manage and oversees the design and development of software products or applications, leads, and directs the team of software engineers to ensure delivery of high-quality software products or applications while following best practices around software development. This role combines technical expertise with management and leadership skills to ensure the successful execution of software projects. Our self-organizing teams employ Agile processes which foster high-performing software development environments. This position requires working with globally distributed team.
**RESPONSIBILITIES:**
Team Leadership & Management:
+ Lead and manage a team of software engineers in the design, development, and deployment of software solutions.
+ Provide guidance and mentorship to team members to promote professional growth and improve performance.
+ Conduct regular performance reviews, set individual goals, and provide feedback.
+ Foster a positive and inclusive team culture with a focus on collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
+ Assist in hiring and building the team by interviewing and recruiting new engineering talent.
Project & Stakeholder Management:
+ Oversee and prioritize the team’s work across multiple software projects, ensuring deadlines and quality standards are met.
+ Work closely with product managers and other stakeholders to define software requirements and project scope.
+ Maintain regular communication with stakeholders, providing updates on project status, risks, and deliverables. Tailor engagement strategies to keep stakeholders informed, involved, and supportive.
+ Manage the planning, execution, and delivery of projects, ensuring the team adheres to timelines, budgets, and resource constraints.
Technical Leadership:
+ Guide the team in the technical design, architecture, and development of scalable, high-performance software solutions.
+ Stay up to date with industry best practices, new technologies, and trends to drive innovation and improvements in the team’s processes and tools.
Collaboration & Cross-Functional Work including Vendor Management:
+ Collaborate with other teams, such as product management, quality assurance, and operations, to ensure seamless project execution.
+ Serve as a liaison between engineering and non-technical stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutions.
+ Manage relationships with third-party vendors and service providers.
+ Monitor vendor performance to ensure the delivery of high-quality services or products. Track key performance metrics and ensure vendors meet their obligations and timelines.
Budget Management:
+ Develop and manage project budgets, ensuring that resources are allocated efficiently. Track expenditures and adjust project scope or resources as necessary to stay within budget.
+ Provide regular budget updates to senior leadership, highlighting variances, potential risks, and corrective actions to ensure financial goals are met.
Process Improvement:
+ Promote Agile, Scrum, or other relevant methodologies to ensure an efficient development process.
+ Continuously evaluate and improve development workflows, tools, and practices to drive productivity and software quality.
Risk Management:
+ Identify and mitigate technical risks that may impact project delivery.
+ Ensure proper issue tracking, escalation procedures, and resolution in collaboration with engineering and product teams.
**Required Skills:**
+ Degree in Computer Science Engineering, or similar.
+ Minimum 5 years of experience managing software development teams, including overseeing day-to-day activities and career development of engineers in product-oriented environments.
+ Minimum 10+ years of software engineering experience as a hands-on engineer building large scale software applications.
+ Hands-on experience with full software development life cycle (SDLC) and Agile methodologies.
+ Strong understanding of software architecture, cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), and modern development tools and frameworks.
+ Strong experience in Stakeholder Management, including engagement with both internal and external parties to ensure project success.
+ Experience in Budget Management, with a proven ability to plan, allocate, and track project costs while identifying areas for financial optimization.
+ Experience in Vendor Management, including negotiating and managing third-party vendors to deliver quality solutions on time and within budget.
+ Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to motivate, coach, and manage a diverse team.
+ Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
+ Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
+ Experience with cloud-native technologies, microservices, and containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
+ Experience with project management tools and methodologies.
Preferred
+ Experience in Oil and Gas domain is a plus.
+ Experience with AI/ML technologies and frameworks.
+ Experience managing remote or distributed teams.
