Engineering Specialist - Metallurgy

In this position... 

Primary role is to provide support for the Chem/Met Lab, quality control for incoming supplier quality, contamination related warranty and VO Pulls, analysis of production issues, incoming material quality, material certifications, other metallurgical and contamination related issues that impact processes or products within the Livonia Transmission Plant.

You'll have... 

Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical/Material Science 5+ years of manufacturing experience with Metallurgy

Even better, you may have...

Powdered metal, steel heat treating, corrosion and weld operations experience. Equipment experience: SEM, Metallograph, inverted stereoscope, stereo microscope, grinding and polishing machines, precision saws, digital and automatic optical microscopes (AOM), borescope.  Method and Standard experience and familiarity: ASTM E18 E10 E45 E112 A29; SAE J864, J423; ISO 4406. Effective oral and written communication skills Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma experience (Black Belt). Lean Tools 5S, Kanban, Poka-yoke, and Value Stream Mapping DMAIC project methodology experience, Kaizen Methods, FMEA, PPAP, DOE knowledge. Mechanical aptitude, familiarity with machining operations Teardown (disassemble) and forensic analysis of material debris and contamination from transmissions components using tools such as SEM (elemental composition) and comparing morphology images to identify sources.

What you'll do...

Apply metallurgical engineering principles and analytical techniques to establish and continuously improve manufacturing processes and products, including troubleshooting and diagnosing failures internally and externally. Develop action plans as required to investigate, prioritize, and diagnose failure related quality concerns regarding heat treat processes, powdered metal components, welding concerns, corrosion, and fracture analysis for both parts and equipment. Summarize and develop reports for findings and investigative work. Continue to develop and build the contamination library for component elemental composition (using SEM) and material morphology and images per operation, for both internal and external suppliers. Utilize this database to troubleshoot and identify contaminants that affect warranty returns and internal failures.  Responsible for calibration, operation, instructions, daily and preventative maintenance for all metallurgical lab equipment including SEM, Keyence microscope, stereoscope, metallograph, polishing, grinding/cutting saws, mounting press and hardness testers. Understand all heat-treating steel processes including carburization, FNC, induction hardening and blank steel processing.  Conduct cursory heat treat inspections (surface hardness, case depth, core hardness). Able to review furnace and incoming steel part data around a suspect population of parts to determine compliance/remediation plan for that material. Able to prepare and evaluate microstructure samples. Maintain material certifications. Support new launch teams. Support Manufacturing Process Engineering activities, drive continuous improvement in safety, quality and productivity.
