Minimum Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a high school diploma or GED plus three years of sub-professional engineering experience.
SUBSTITUTIONS:
Six months of experience in sub-professional engineering, heavy mobile equipment operation, or mobile equipment maintenance will substitute for the high school diploma or GED.
College training will substitute for the required experience on the basis of thirty semester hours for one year of experience provided that six semester hours of each thirty are in one of these specialized fields: architecture, cartography, chemistry, construction management, construction technology, drafting, engineering, engineering graphics, engineering technology, geography, geology, industrial technology, landscape architecture, math, or physics.All specialized course work credited must be in the same specialized field. A combination of course work from different fields will not be accepted.
Full-time training in sub-professional engineering from a trade school or technical institute will substitute for the required experience on a month-for-month basis for a maximum of one year of experience.
Completion of a two year course of study in a sub-professional engineering curriculum from a trade school or technical institute will substitute for two years of the required experience.
A baccalaureate degree in engineering, engineering technology, construction management or construction technology will substitute for all of the required experience.
Possession of an engineer intern certificate will substitute for all of the required experience.
NOTE: Any college hours or degree must be from an accredited college or university.
Job Concepts
Function of Work:
To perform very complex, sub professional engineering tasks of a complex nature requiring intensive training & diversified experience in a specialized area; and/or to serve as lead worker over lower-level technicians and/or other personnel engaged in sub professional engineering work.
Level of Work:
Advanced.
Supervision Received:
Broad from an Engineering Technician 6, 7, or professional engineer or higher level manager of the agency served.
Supervision Exercised:
May exercise functional supervision on a project-by-project basis. May directly supervise one or two lower level staff.

Job Distinctions:
Differs from Engineering Technician 4 by the performance of more complex, highly specialized duties and/or the presence of lead worker responsibilities or by the presence of direct line supervision over one or two staff members under certain circumstances as defined in the applicable Allocation Criteria memo.
Differs from Engineering Technician DCL by the lack of responsibility for serving as a technical expert/specialist in a specific field of technical engineering.
Differs from Engineering Technician 6 or 7 by the absence of full time supervisory responsibilities over several staff members.
Examples of Work
This position is the lead worker of the Geotechnical Explorations Unit field crew and. as such. exercises functional supervision in the absence of the Geotcchnical Explorations Unit Engineering Technician 7. This position is also responsible for making recommendations to the Gcotcchnical Explorations Engineering Technician 7 regarding personnel actions and ratings (PES) of each subordinate. This position is also a recognized cxpe11 in the requirements and methods of obtaining soil samples from deep foundation borings for use in the design or structural foundations. As such. this position may also be responsible for monitoring geotechnical consulting firms· crews who are performing work for the department under contract.
30% As Lead Worker, functionally supervises drilling rig and/or ECPT truck operations starting with ensuring technicians are prepared to accomplish assigned tasks. Verifies that necessary safety precautions are followed such as proper traffic control, proper PPE is used and functions correctly and proper drilling procedures are followed. Performs field reconnaissance to locate boring and ECPT locations requested by the Pavement & Geotechnical Services Section. Ensures there are no underground or overhead utilities 1hat could be damaged during drilling operations. Also contacts landowners to advise them of the DOTO personnel entering/leaving private prope1ty. Ensure samples arc handled and packaged correctly for transport to the laboratory. Also responsible for ensuring that all rules and regulations governing drilling operations. such as casing setting and grouting completed boreholes are followed in order to protect groundwater in the area.
20% Liaison between the GEU and L TRC to monitor training requirements - specifically assists in the creation and revision of performance evaluations, creating written evaluations. and other training aids as necessary to ensure the safety of the GEU personnel. Coordinates with all parties in LTRC and DOTO to ensure that our written training is effective and beneficial for the department.
20% Assists the Engineering Technician 7 in training subordinate technicians in the many tasks involved in obtaining soil samples from deep borings to ensure the safety of the crew, and the safe efficient operation of the equipment.
20% Responsible for collecting all records of exploration work ensuring data collected is valid plotted and labeled correctly, and is legible. Delivers data to 1he Engineering Technician 7 for proper storage. including field books, boring logs, plan sets a utility location map, etc. Responsible for completing supplemental forms such as equipment reports project/boring cost analysis sheets and miscellaneous correspondence.
5% Assists the Engineering Technician 7 by monitoring field crews from geotechnical firms under contract with the Department ensuring that the consultant has adequate equipment to perform the work properly is following standard operating procedures and is complying with 1hc same rules and regulations governing drilling operations under which DOTO operates. Also verifies that they are drilling at the proper location(s). Has the authority to direct the consultant crew to stop drilling operations until improper conditions arc corrected.
5% May be required to perform other duties as necessary including, but not limited to. emergency/disaster support activities.
