Description of Work

In this position, you will serve as an Engineering Technician II in the Century Center Resident Engineer’s Office and support higher level technicians and engineers in functional areas such as construction inspection, surveying, materials sampling, testing, and construction traffic control. Your work functions may include inputting of specific project information into HiCAMS system including, but not limited to sampling, material received including bill of materials, pay record quantities including ticket items, densities including both soil and asphalt, verifying final estimate quantities and data with respect to work accomplished on construction projects.
The position requires the performance of a wide variety of standardized and non-standardized tests and assignments in compiling, analyzing, computing, editing and processing field data. You must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing related to this position. You must be proficient in record keeping and have the ability to have a close visual acuity to use testing instruments, to read plan details, to make accurate field measurements and to inspect roadway and structure components. You may be exposed to high traffic volumes, work at heights over water or traffic, and climb on the substructure and superstructure of bridges.
You must have the ability to safely perform manual tasks involving the use of bush axes and other tools on steep slopes and rough terrain. Your work may include other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
You should have the demonstrated ability to supervise the activities of lower-level employees and instruct them to proper work methods. You may drive or place survey stakes, operate surveying instruments, cut brush, and run tests on materials, all in accordance with established policies and procedures. You may inspect roadway and bridge projects.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

+ Knowledge in understanding contracts, plans, standards and specification
+ Experience in performing inspection, sampling, and testing of materials (concrete, asphalt density) to ensure compliance with NCDOT specifications
+ Working knowledge of computer equipment (iPads, desktop), software (HiCAMS and SharePoint), and mathematical functions
+ Skill in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures
Additional Expectations
You must be able to operate a motor vehicle. You must have the ability to work outside in various types of weather, terrain, and hours. You must have the ability to perform heavy lifting. May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays and extended hours as necessary. Safety toes shoes required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
