Description of Work

This position is in Guilford County in the Greensboro District Engineer’s Office. This is an Engineering Technician II position that works independently reviewing design plans for driveway permits, encroachment agreements and subdivisions, both in the office and on site, to ensure that the proposed work meets NCDOT standards and specifications. Employee contacts engineering firms, local and state government offices, and private entities to make revisions as needed. This position will also do follow up inspections to check the progress of work, completion of work, and final inspections for bond releases.
All duties and responsibilities require attention to detail, the ability to work in a team environment, strong customer service skills, excellent communication skills, the ability to trouble shoot and problem solve for solutions, and the ability to prioritize tasks and duties. Ability to establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the general public. Work involves independent decision making and use of judgement. Must be able to document and take some corrective actions and apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. Ability to complete daily diaries, survey notes and other record keeping items manually and electronically. Be able to perform construction related mathematical calculations.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

+ Skill in evaluating and applying engineering judgment to construction plans, contract provisions, and inspection procedures.
+ Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.
+ Demonstrated ability to lead co-workers on assigned tasks .
+ Experience in utilizing applications (apps) on iPads and computer programs.
Additional Expectations
Applicant will be required to acquire various certifications, including QMS Asphalt, Concrete Testing, Borrow Pit Sampling and MSHA Certifications. Employee must be able to lift 40 to 50 pounds, work in high traffic areas, and work at heights over water or traffic, extreme temperatures, able to traverse uneven terrain, work at night and weekends if necessary. Safety toe shoes are required. Selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
