Description of Work

This position will serve as an Engineering Technician III within the Columbus County Maintenance office. This Technician III will support the Engineer in preparing plans, documents, and estimates. There duties will include investigation of crosslines and road conditions within the assigned section of the county and helping to create a yearly RMIP plan, ahead of HMIP. The plan will include replacing crossline’s, lining crossline’s, repairing stump holes, asphalt overlays, widening, and mill/fill repairs needed ahead of highway treatments such as resurfacing and preservation.
This position will perform on-site inspections to ensure contracts and NCDOT specifications on our roadways are, in compliance. The Tech III will also communicate with contractors to schedule work, oversee that details of the contract are adhered to, and ensure line items and payments are correct with contractors’ invoice. This position will monitor and administer NCDOT’s Stormwater Pollution Prevention Programs to ensure the facility complies within acceptable regulations and guidelines. They will perform, track and load safety audits for worksites and facilities to SharePoint.
This position will be responsible for entering, marking, and monitoring 811 locates as needed. Other duties will include measuring stockpiles for inventory, calibrating salt spreaders, preparing documentation using various computer software programs, and helping with CARS as needed.
This position will assist the County Maintenance Engineer as needed during emergencies and inclement weather. This position will also assist the County Engineer with other tasks as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
+ Experience applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems.
+ Computer experience including office software and drafting software.
+ Knowledge of mathematical functions (such as algebra, geometry and trigonometry).
+ Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, contract provisions, specifications and procedures.
+ Experience in taking notes, collecting field data and preparing routine reports.
Additional Expectations
The selected candidate will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes will be required.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressive technician level experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
